we're taking another group to Costa Rica in APril. Typically we take anywhere from 2-10 herpers. Some people fly in to Sirena Bio Station while a few of us hike in Via Los Patos to Sirena and then back out to Carate.
We go for a week but I will be staying an extra few days to hunt for bushmasters with our guide and some local gold miners.

Costa Rica! I'm jealous. My dream is to capture and study bushmasters in Costa Rica. Good Luck Matt! Hope you find a big blackhead.
Good luck in advance to everyone for all your 2004 spring herping trips.
Sankeman1982, you know how to start a topic that gets everyone going, thanks.

I am actually planning 2 big trips. My first one is Spring Break. My wife and I are going to spend a few days near Tampa, then several days in the Everglades and the Ft. Lauderdale area then up north to the Alligator Farm in St Augustine.
During May, I plan to hit Appalachicola for a few days. That one is purely a herping trip too!

Hey Chris,
I haven't been herping in Mexico yet but plan on it soon. In Az we caught a Sonoran Gopher about a mile from the border and stayed near the border most of the time.
If I don't get a chance to spend some time in Costa Rica this summer then I will probably spend atleast a couple of weeks traveling down the Sierra Madres of Mexico. Back up plans for failure of Costa Rica are being processed as we speak. I'll be doing atleast two good desert herp trips in replace of Costa Rica this summer. Currently, our plans are to travel down the west coast of Mexico (not Baja) and herp.
There are only two problems I think we will have with herping in Mexico. One is that they won't let you bring a gun with you for protection.
The other is that I can't seem to find a good field guide for Western Mexico besides Lee Grismer's Baja books, which does us little or no good on the other side of the Gulf of California. There is a book by Rozella and Hobart M. Smith "Synopsis of the Herpetofauna of Mexico". Has anyone used or seen this book? If so, is it worth the $85? Are there any better field guide than this? I have Julian Lee's and Jonathan Campbell's Yucatan books but they'll do me little good in western Mexico.
We'll I still have plenty of time to decide but will definitely do it eventually.

I'm thinking maybe Thailand or elsewhere in South East Asia for next spring break. Gotta love the S.E. Asian herps and inverts.
