STRANGE PHOTOS: Weird News In Pictures
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Indonesian villagers claim to have captured a python that is 49.21 feet long and weighs nearly 1,000 pounds, a local official said Monday.
If confirmed, it would be the largest snake ever kept in captivity.
Hundreds of people have flocked to see the snake at a primitive zoo in Curugsewu village on the country's main island of Java, Republika daily reported. It splashed two large pictures of the reptile across its back page.
Local government official Rachmat said the reticulated python measured 14.85 meters (49 feet) and weighed in at 447 kilograms (985 pounds).
The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest ever captured snake to be 9.75 meters (32 feet). The heaviest--a Burmese Python kept in Gurnee, Illinois--weighs 182.76 kilograms (403 pounds), the book said on its Web site.
Rebublika said the snake, which was caught last year but only recently put on public display, eats three or four dogs a month.
Reticulated pythons are the world's longest snakes. They are capable of eating animals as large as sheep, and have been known to attack and consume humans.
The species is native to the swamps and jungles of Southeast Asia.

Just read it and saw the video on CNN. I don't know if it looked 50 ft but its hard to tell. It seems like a hard lie to get away with. I guess that may come closer to age old dispute of which is longer, the retic or the anaconda. But maybe it leaves are minds open to what other monsters could be lurking out there. I just never imagined 49 ft was a possibility these days.

Hello fellow herpers!
I have only seen one photo of the snake so far.
I've kept Python reticulatus for a number of years now and have seen many BIG specimens both in the flesh and in photos.
In my opinion, it is somewhere between 20 - 25 feet still a respectable size, but NOWHERE NEAR 14.8 Meters! I HOPE I'M WRONG!! One thing for sure though -IF it does turn out to be a record beater, I'm booking my flight to Java!!
Happy New Year

I would like to believe this story to be true, but I have serious doubts as to its accuracy. I could determine nothing from the photo I've seen other than it looks big, perhaps 20 feet or more. I will be anxiously awaiting for more details to come forth.

There is a video on the BBC's website that actually shows the length of the whole snake. I did some rough mensurations and there is a guy standing in front of the enclosure and if he is about 5 feet tall the enclosure is roughly 15 feet long. In this video they show the snake is doubled over the length of the enclosure and on a perch about 3 feet high. Given this, the snake is at least 33 feet long. Also, in the video a guy kissed the snakes head and it is longer than his head. So, you can probably guess that the snakes head is close to 2 feet long. Is there any magic ratio for length of head to length of body (like will alligators)? Either way, this is a big snake!
here is the link with the video.
