New/old medicines made from snakes venoms. I just thought I would start a trend on all the great new/old medicines they are making from venom.
like the one that has me feeling so great the newer drug made from copperhead venom to treat Brest cancer. It has stop and considerably slow up to 60-70 % of the tumor growth in Brest cancer in women. That is amazing. and they have made so many other great drugs from venoms. heart drugs, pain drugs, stroke. Etc. It is so cool something so deadly could save so many lives. I all so read about a new drug being used as a booster type shot for dogs against snake bites. to help if they are bite. kind of like doing self injections of snake venom to help build an immunity if you can not receive antivenin like me. The dog gets one shot per year to help if it is bitten. Anyways, Like to hear some others thoughts on all this....
Thanks,
Fabian

I have heard of an erectile disfunction drug that they are looking at in Chile that comes from Black Widow venom. It is also a short term contraceptive as it renders men infertile for approximatly twenty minutes. The breast cancer drug you are refering to is called Contortrotoxin, I think.

I couldnt remember the name of the drug or treatment if you paid me...
the Enzyme lecithinase is found in Naja venom, tis used for hemophiliac patients
Lecithinase is also pretty much phospholipase.
There are several enzymes that hydrolyze lecithins or phosphatidylethanolamines, Im unsure what the other ones would be used towards, if not the same thing, or if anything at all.

There are lots of venoms being looked at for different medical usage but these are fractions and not whole raw venom . As one of the suppliers of venom for the cancer research by Dr. Markland and the dog vaccine I would like to point out neither has anything to do with self injecting. Also the vaccine idea is not new it was tried on the Ryu Ryu islands in the early 80's for habus. It was shown to be of little use because it had no effect on tissue death and antisera was still needed in some cases. Some of the test subjects also had health problems that developed that may or may not have been from the vaccine. This info was told to me by the late Dr. Minton and JR Harrison.
It is important to know that there is a difference between real science and just playing at it. Playing at it with venoms can and in the past has cost people their lives. Just an observation from Jim is that several keepers and self injectors have developed cancer after several years of injecting. All in the lymph nodes. No science here but just as interesting an observation as some self injectors have been passing off as science. Exposure to venom can increase your antigens but both good and bad responses can occur. Also this increase does not effect tissue damage and if your level of antigens is not high enough the venom will still kill you . Without the guidelines of a real doctor self injection is dangerous and has already been shown to be to risky. Mr. Harrison once said if all I needed was a shot a week I would be shooting up with venom but all the evidences is that the risk outweighs any benefits . With good antisera , medical care and safe handling no one should attempt to play doctor or give kids the idea that it is safe . Mr.Harrison averages about 600 to 1000 extractions a week and has been doing so for over 28 years and is very much against this dangerous practice (self injecting) both for the people and the snakes that are stressed for no real good reason.
I post on this subject because I care about the kids and also about science/snakes.
As adults you can sit at home and shot up with venom but when you get others involved and pass it off as science you are getting into the land of the FDA and AMA. Keepers have enough problems without more. Also there has been laws passed on using toxins and promoting their usage. The law enforcement people are just over loaded with work just wait until some bad press occurs.

Hi Kristen,
I was not really speaking of self injections with snake venom. I started this trend about the new/old drugs that are being made from the venom and yes, they are all being made from just some of the proteins of the venoms. I do not think there is any drug I have ever read about that was made from the hole venom. Anyways, This trend is not about self injections. It is about the great drugs they are making from venom. Thanks for all the great info on self injections though. The new dog drug I am talking about seems more like an injection of venom as a hole that anything. Just a low dose of it. I do not know much about it yet. I have not taken the time to read about it much.
Thanks,
Fabian

The dog vaccine is made with toxiods and not raw venom injected into the dogs to build up restaints. Also it is not without its shortcomings. Antisera will often still be needed. Thought it is intersting it still has away to go.
To often self injecting comes up when venom research or venom is discussed. That is why when it does I point out the problems with it. Self injecting can take peoples minds off of real research that may save lives.

Hey,
So the drug for the dog's is just made of some of the proteins from the venom ? like most of all the new drugs they are making. just proteins or small part of the hole venoms. The hole venom is made up of so many things to affect it's victim. There for it would be hard to use it as a hole. I guess that is why they only use it in parts. Like Chris was saying about the black widow venom. All venoms can be use to save life's. I believe that all the new medicines on the market right now made from venoms are saving way more life's then the animals ever took. How great is that (Cool) Why to go venomous animals LOL. Maybe some day they will get the name they really deserve.
