I keep my hot room at about 79-82F. I keep my gaboon enclosures 2 inches off the floor to give them a little cooler temp. I provide under tank heat at one end of the enclosure to provide a hot spot and i keep the other end cool. Gaboons are pretty sedentary and will sit in one spot for long periods of time. However, I give them LOTS of room to roam if they choose. They love to "dig in" to their substrate and so I provide a thick layer of aspen or cypress mulch. I keep a large water dish at the cool end of the enclosure. Give the enclosure adequate airflow. Gaboons are EXTREMELY prone to dehydration and resulting impactions. These animals are accustomed to high humidity environments where their water source comes to them. Many gaboons will not drink on their own at first. I soak mine for 30 or 45 minutes AT LEAST once a week. This is a MUST. I also mist their enclosures every now and then. Gaboons can consume slightly larger prey than other vipers of the same length, but I recommend being a little on the conservative side with prey size. When handling use two hooks. One a third of the way from the head and the other a third away from the tail. These guys are so stocky that even fairly small specimens can suffer spine strain from "dangling" them improperly or using your hook in the middle of the animal.
