I recently purchased a rhyino viper. Problem is he has a bummed eye. It looks like an enlarged bubble of puss.
Previous owner said he would "pop" bubble and puss would drain out eye and mouth. If anyone knows what or how to treat this please let me know.

Geeze....I hate when hot's get sick, it makes the treating part all the more difficult without ending up in the hospital yourself. Hope you got someone to help you with this and your good at "tubing" snakes. With that said:
1)Don't take any chances with you safety. Yes, well all of us hate to loose an animal but the dude that had it before you should have treated the infection. Don't you get bit trying to save this animal.
2) You need to contact a local Vet. with reptile experience, hopefully. This might be like banging your head against the wall but you need there assistance. Tell them about the situation. No way will they want you to bring the snake in BUT make sure they know you will do the "dangerious part" and they grow the culture and give you the antibiotic to treat it. Injectable is the only way to go unless you like to shove pills down a Rhinovipers throat for a hobby.
3) You will need to clean the wound after you take the culture as per the vets instructions.
4) If all else fails ( Vets won't help) don't let the animal suffer and put it down. The freezer is the best way.
I hope somebody else has a better way of dealing with this but this is how I would if it was my animal.
Good Luck & Be safe
Al

I have work on cattle/horse ranches most of my life and was wondering ! we used LA-200 a great antibiotic We used it for treating a lot of our hurt cows and horses. It is a great all around antibiotic. Vets used it on everything cats, dogs, etc. does anyone know can it be used on snakes as well? I would be glad to talk to my vet about your snake and let you know. But maybe JR Harrison or ? can help you with some advice... Let me know and I will find out if you need me to.... Fabian

Most reptile antibiotics, as far as I know, are different, at least in strength than mammalian antibiotics. Reptiles almost always have a slow metabolism and therefore have a different dosing schedule. On top of that, and I know nothing about LA-200, but if it's used on cattle it's is probably VERY strong because of their weight, and therefore would need to be diluted drastically to be used on reptiles. Baytril is a common drug used on mammals and reptiles but you have to get the dosing schedule right. Cornsnakes require a different dose than pythons and Rhino vipers probaby require a different dose than either. Contact a vet to see if they even know anything about treating reptiles or if not, are they willng to do some research to prescribe the right medications. Try to contact a member of ARAV(if that's not right somebody correct me) and they will help as best they can.

Here's a link to the ARAV site. You should be able to find a qualified vet to help you through them.
