What the F- is wrong in FLorida? why is it so hard to get a permit to own a snake that I could easily find anywhere across the state? Sorry. ranting... I just moved here from GA, any native specie doesn't require a permit... All I really want (to get started!) is to own one lil copperhead. then after getting used to dealing with venomous handling, etc, move into some of the So. amer. eye lash vipers. My main question is how, and with whom can I get that rediculus 1000 hrs of training out of the way, to get my permit? Thanks in advance, for your response.

LOL!!! I'm dumb. I completely overlooked mentioning that. Its good to laugh at yourself right?
Anyways, I just moved to Miami, South beach to be exact. I've been searching for the past two months and haven't gotten any closer, outside of seeing some beautiful pictures on the net of some eyelash vipers.... tried the zoo, no response, tried dealers, response? "just find a local licensed person..." I'm about to just move back to Atlanta, at least there I can own all six native species without needing a license...I KNOW i have enough experience with snakes to deal with them, but agree that it would be better to have a person experienced in hots to "train" me....

If you don't find anywhere closer, come check us out at the Everglades Outpost (www.evergladesoutpost.org). The drive is kind of a pain (an hour each way from South Beach), but it's the only place in South Florida I know of where you can put in serious hours, and if you put in a 1000 hours here, you really will be qualified to handle almost anything when you're done. We could especially use the help if you can work Mon,Tue,Thurs or Friday. If you're interested, email me (lfishel@madprogrammer.com) or stop by on Wednesday or Saturday (or see Albert any other day). BTW, I put in most of my hours here while living on South Beach, so it can be done... :)

Larry,
that is incredibly nice of you to make such a generous offer.
I hope he takes you up on it - I would.
I think that the FL permit system is still one of the best working sytems around. Look at the permit system in place in GA and tell me how ridiculous the price would be when it came time to move on to eyelash vipers. Sure we can keep indigenous venomous with no permit. But in FL, finish your hours and pay your hundred dollars and you can keep ANYTHING!
Still, I guess everyone needs SOMETHING to complain about.

From my own limited experience, I'm glad I HAD to do the 1000 hours. It took me several years to get it all done but I can honestly say it was a great experience. If anything, it will seperate the ones who are genuinely interested from the weekend hot keepers. The jump for $5 to $100 was a bit much though.....just my .02

I'm definitely going to take you up on that offer to work in the everglades, it sounds like a great experience! I just need to get settled a bit more first. My "stiker shock" was wit the native species, I could easily manage a copperhead now, but according to Law I would be in violation if I owned one, even if I had moved here with one from Georgia. That kind freaked me out, cause I almost bought a timber, a pygmy, and a copperhead before I moved. I've owned snakes my whole life, and the next step for me is venomous....the Law also is odd, in that if I intend to display, meaning have out in plian view, I need to make a $1000 deposit too, any body know if these are required every year? I think the license has to be bought every year too, correct me if I'm wrong.

My understanding is that the $1000 is a "deposit", not a fee, and so it's good for as long as you have your license AND refundable if you ever give up your license. I believe, but this part is not specifically spelled out, that it's also refundable if you lose it for any reason other than your snakes causing injury to someone else, since that's what the depost is intended to cover. Like $1000 would make a dent in THAT lawsuit... :)

LOL! Yeah, I haven't heard of any cases where antivenin injections cost that little. thanks for straightening that out, I plan on having my species as centerpieces of my home, so 1000 onetime is better than every year...you'd think that the 1000 would be better suited to be used to procure a better, safer cage, (say, lexan instead of glass) than to insure after the fact. the 1000 bucks wouldn't even cover the first set of injections!

When I got my permit, last year, the $1000 Bond was explained to me like this: You deposited an amount (~$100) with an insurance company to guarantee a $1000 Bond in case of an accident involving your snake.
As with anything purchased from an insurance company, the final amount is less than what you initially have to pay but the amount you have to pay will probably vary from insurance company to insurance company. This bond will have to be renewed each time your license is renewed.
I recommend contacting someone who has a Florida license and is maintaining the bond and asking them which insurance company they are using. I do not have the bond as I am not currently displaying.
Cheers,
Karl H. Betz
