I want to know if moving about 50 cottons to a new location would be ok for them. They were being slaughtered by a couple local idiots and I felt moving them 60 miles to a safer location would be ok. I put them in a huge lake with massive amouts of growth.

I'm not sure about Cottonmouths. However, a study done with radio tagged rattlers, mostly atrox collected by the fire department in Arizona were moved from homeowners backyards to a local state park. Keep in mind this state park is prime undisturbed desert that is just an awsome reptile habitat. The study learned that 50% of the rattlers relocated did not live more than a year. Rattlers have specific den sites they use and if taken away many do not find sutable for them to "winter over" till spring.
Enviromental law being as screwed up as it is NOW just allows the fire department to re-locate the offending snake to somewhere else on the homeowners property. They are NOT allowed to remove the snake from the property!! SO, When they leave the homeowner goes out and kills it with a shovel, 100% mortality vs 50% for the relocated animal. What were they thinking!! Having 50% die because of relocation or 100% killed by a homeowner, having 50% morality wins hands down.
This is what I know about this topic. I would relocate them, it's better than having some creatins kill them all.
Let us know how it goes,
Best,
Al

They may have had a better chance at survival if it had been possible to break up the group and put them at a few different places, but I don't know if this was feasable in your case. None the less, I think everyone is happy that you made a great effort just moving the snakes to a safer location. It takes alot of patience and skill to move 50 hots!
Hope everything works out
