I'm getting ready to get into hot herps, and was wondering what kind of enclosures were people using...homemade, purchased, etc... where'd you buy em? I know its based on species size, I'm thinking my first is gonna be a copperhead....to start out... then into some eyelash vipers...and a E. Diamondback.

The reason I'm asking, is cause I live in FL, and the regulations require that my setup be examined by the officials before I can get my license, and I was under the impression that glass cages weren't of the best choice...

If you can get a hold of one.., Neodesha enclosures are one of the best. They are out of business right now, I have heard, for the second time. But you can find people selling them (on here sometimes). If you can get one of them, that is a good enclosure, and Vision cages are good as well. You can use glass aquariums if you modify them to have a locking (secure) lid, escpecially with the FL officials inspecting your enclosures. Best of luck!!

Hi:
I use Vision Cages for my larger Hots that I really want to keep under lock & key. The only thing I don't like about the Vision cages is that there is a recessed area above and below the sliding glass doors. Of course the snakes hide in these areas and nobody likes going into a cage not knowing exactly where the biting end is hiding. I cut soft foam to fill the void and tuck the substrate up against the foam. Shop around because prices and delivery vary.
Precision Caging for my desert or Arid climate hots or less dangerious animals. The guy that does Precision Cages is a good guy and his product is excellently crafted. No places to hide here unless you create one near the door. I made a locking bar that goes across the door to keep un-wanted people out and the herp in.
Just my input, I have no stake in either of these companies but they do have good stuff. I don't have time to fabricate my own and these are escape proof as they get, as long as you remember to shut it when your done
Good Luck,
Al

I totally agree with Al! Visoion's are the best with the exception of the recessed area.

I personally love my neodesha's, especially when it comes to cleaning and just general moving around, they are way lighter than vision cages (as long as you have the plexi front). They are much better for viewing as well. The vision cages are better for lights and heating lamps, and can be locked (with a jeweler's lock) much easier. They vision's are much more durable as well. Both are good cages, so I guess it's a preference to the person, they both have pros and cons.
If price is an issue, I'd go with the neo's. If you're going to keep tree vipers, I'd consider building your own. I kept mine in a vision cage and it got pretty tricky getting them out at times. The vision's also have a space between the two pieces when closed, so a small, thin snake could fit through the crack.
All in all, I like them both but feel the neo's are just easier to work with and provide maximum viewing and safety, for half the price of vision's.

I think I said something about this on another thread (I think it was on here anyway) but I'm not sure if that thread was removed or what. I personally like Animal Plastics cages over Vision, Neo, etc. Though I don't personally own any of them yet, I've seen them in action and I think they're great. They're made of a very tough plastic material that makes them not warp when stacked. Visions are very well-known for warping over time or with added weight, which can make it rather difficult to slide open the doors. AP used to only have swing-open doors, and that was my major concern with them, especially if I'm going to get them for my PNG taipans. Having a very fast, very deadly elapid in a swinging door enclosure would be, to me, a very bad idea. However, recently AP began production of their sliding door enclosures, and I believe you can now get just about any model with that option. They also have a belly heat option that comes built into the floor, all you have to do is supply the thermostat and wire it up. This prevents the need for under tank heaters, heat lamps, or worse, the dreaded hot rocks. Lastly, their prices beat anyone else on the market. Their medium-sized cage, which can house most venomous species with room to spare (48x24x15) can be acquired for $235, plus $40 if you want the belly heat option. For smaller ones they obviously go down from there, but it's pretty apparent that their cages are very reasonably priced, especially when considering (IMHO) they are a great deal better than the others.
Anyway, that's my thoughts on the subject. I hope this isn't viewed as too much of a plug, because I too have no stake in this company or any reason to support it other than the fact that I want them to get more business so they can potentially lower their prices even further. Good luck with whatever you go with.
