To all,
If you haven't signed the venomoid petition, please take the time to do so, the snakes will appreciate it.

This is just a thought. Yes I am totally against Venomoid's but----Lets just say there is a person who would like to keep hots, but to every exuasted lead he/she could not find an experienced handler to show them what to do. I would personally rather someone start with a venomoid and progress than risk the chance of a bite and than all of us catch hell and possibly have more laws passed about keeping these animals. Just let me say this one more time, I am totally against venomoids!!!!!!!!!!!! I know i will proably hear some heat about this so go ahead and lay it on me.

well i'm not totaly aginst venomoids i dont own any but i personally have mixed feelings but to address the question i would say that it probably be a better idea if that person to find other means to learn to saftly care for venomous reptiles. he or she needs to find a mentore although its not always a must i never had a mentor cause there simply is nobody in the area that is qualified to mentor me in fact i only know of one other venomous keeper with in 50 miles so and i have taught my self how to care for these wonderfull animals but it would have been easier to do with the aide of a more advanced hobbyist trust me try having a 4ft long cottonmouth lose in your living room floor cause you wanted to take pictures he is really pissed off and you really dont know what your doing scary trust me i have been there but thanxs to this great site i was able to find out all the info i needed like what tools i need and the do's and donts so any way im going on and on the point is i have heard that ducts can possibly grow back and i really dont know but i wouldnt want to take the chance being a new keeper or an old keeper some of the more advanced keepers would most likly be more inclined to keep there gaurd up instead of toying around with a snake causes they think there safe in my opinion i would think that venomous or venomoid there not for beginners
hope this helps

Venomoids should not be sold as a stepping stone for owning a venomous snake.
If a person isn't ready for a venomous snake then they should get a non-venomous snake. You shouldn't butcher an animal because you are afraid to take a bite. If you aren't ready, then you aren't ready (there shouldn't be a rush).
If you want a snake that hurts when it bites you but won't deliver venom, don't buy a venomoid, get a watersnake. People seem to want venomoids because they want the thrill and bragging rights of a venomous species without the danger. Not that I am for just anybody owning a snake but there is no reason to purchase a venomoid when there are plenty of non-venomous species, equally as interesting.
If you don't care enough about your snakes to be disturbed at their disfigurement, then you probably shouldn't be owning snakes at all (or any other animal, including gold fish).

I will totally agree with the fact that most people want venomoids for"bragging rights." I still stand firm about the thought of using them as a way to learn. Fact of the matter is, if someone wants a venomous snake they will get it under any circumstance. So if someone is willing to get a venomoid to learn from so be it. Under the bragging situation there is no excuse, those are the ones who should not have a snake in the first place. I would rather see a person learn and not get good dose of venom and all hot keepers take the rap for it. Karl and Chris what is you take on this just curious?

Since you specifically ask for my opinion - here it is:
I do not agree with venomoids for any learning situations or any private keeper situations.
There is NO REASON for anyone to be taking venomoid mambas, cobras or gaboons or whatever to shows and schools and such to show kids that snakes aren't bad - they aren't going to find a gaboon or mamba in their back yard!
Venomoiding a rattlesnake to do those shows does not teach the kids to leave them alone. Learning to handle a venomoid that you know can't kill you is not going to help you build the respect you need to keep yourself out of strike range. Any doubts of the need to learn that can be cleared up by looking at the picture accompanying the article by Bret Welch "Bitten By The Big One."
The ONLY reason I can see for venomoid snakes hasn't been discussed much.
I can see a need for venomoids so that zoos could display a range of animals that normally wouldn't be seen in this country. That would help them with liabilty insurance and alleviate the need to carry an expensive load of antivenin that they are just going to lose to some irresponsible private keeper anyway.
I believe that if you are not ready to put in the time to learn how to properly and safely keep a particular animal in its normal state - then you shouldn't keep it. Hence, I don't keep elapids because I haven't had time to properly study their behavior.
Just my personal opinion.
There will be more about venomoids in the upcoming newsletter.
