If people were to do everything just right and did not take any chances then I would say that most hot keepers would make it through there lives with out a bite. But, That is not going to happen. Most keepers do things wrong, some to show off, some because they do not have the right tools, and tons of other reasons. That is why most hot keepers will be bitten at some point in there lives.
People are just like that they do things that they know are very dangerous but yet they do it anyways.
Most just looking for the adrenalin rush. But, you take all the ones looking for the high of doing something dangerous and them that just do not know how to do it right. and add the tons of other mistakes made daily for all other reasons and you have another bitten hot keeper.

Fabian,
Listen to everyone else. "There is no reason to believe that you will one day be bitten? If done right and responsibly.
Ask all the people you know why they got bit...Ask yourself why you have been bitten...
And please don't take offence to this... but it's because they/you made a mistake.
Everyone else,
Mistakes are human, mistakes are easy to make. One is likely to make mistakes all through Ones life.
If you have one or two or ten or twenty venomous snakes to care for..... there is no reason to be bitten..... take your time.
I care for upwards of 1000 venomous snakes every week for many years.....No bites! Am I perfect? NO. I never implied that.
I stress the importance of keeping antivenom if you keep venomous snakes.. this is for the sole reason of those mistakes.
The people that are "showing off" are really not part of the equation...
no antivenom+freehandling=stupidity=mistake=snakebite!
enjoy the hobby, believe that you are not doing something with the snakes that countless people before you haven't already done, learn, enjoy and be safe!

you must remember one thing. the entire hobby will relate back to this one statement. snakes in gerneral are totally unpredictable. i.e : you may have a E.A. Green Mamba that acts the same way everytime you enter it's enclosure, but there is a 99.9% chance that the snake will become startled, aggresive, or otherwise unpredictable at some point in time. the .1% chance could be a fatal one! myself...i have been bitten (southern copperhead) but it was out of pure stupidity and underestimation of the animal! you may be the lucky one that never gets popped but as someone said in the above posts.....you WILL at some point have to restrain or become dangerouslly close to venomous end of a snake! thats just the laws of dealing with them. let this sink in... you can use all the care and tools in the world but lets say you all the sudden become light headed (for unknown reasons) when tubeing a "heat seeking" eastern diamondback rattler. you may pass out allowing the already angry snake to escape the tube and eventually bite you. Yes, very unlikely, but once again, possible to anyone! do not ever think your stronger and smarter than the snake because until the snake can talk to you and tell you if it's mad or not, you have no idea whats it's thinking. be safe in keeping your snakes. remember, another word for venomoid is insurance!!! thanks for your time. rowdy kent. atheris2004@yahoo.com
