Tagging turtles

hi,
i there is a pond in my town with many turtles in it. how can i tag the turtles to let me know if i have ever caught them before? i want to know a way that will mark the turtles somehow without hurting them. i want this way to be permadent and recignizable so if i ever catch them again, i will know. thank you!

We use these transmitters for radiotracking box and blanding's turtles in NY. The transmitters are applied with epoxy.
There are other techniques where specific marginal scutes are notched with a small rat-tail file.
Check with your state game and fish dept. regarding any laws or regs for caturing or restraining wildlife, just to make sure you're not violating any laws. Here in NY a License to collect/possess is required for doing field studies.
