I just found this on kingsnake forums: TIMES-DAILY (Florence, Alabama) 23 June 04 Man dies from snake bite at creek in Loachapoka
(AP): A man bitten on each hand by a copperhead snake last week at Saugahatchee Creek in Loachapoka has died.
Trent Leprettre, 31, of the Little Texas community in Macon County, who was bitten June 14, was taken off life support Sunday morning from complications arising from anaphylactic shock.
Family members said Leprettre had been swimming at the creek with his 9-year-old daughter, who went to get help after he was bitten.
"Someone called 911 and it didn't take long, about 20 to 30 minutes, to get to the hospital," said his mother-in-law, Gail Spradlin.
Leprettre's immediate symptoms were swelling in the throat and difficulty breathing. He later had to be revived after heart failure.
He was given medication to counter the snake poison, but family members said he was highly allergic to the venom.
Just goes to show what copperhead venom can do......Fabian

Fabian....I was not the Copperhead venom that killed him it was the foriegn protein that the venom is made of that did him in. See Dr. Frys' website for details under "Pumpkin Head" section of his CV.

Anaphalaxis kills faster than most of the venoms. Always have an Epi-pen and some Bendryl handy.

Right it was from complications arising from anaphylactic shock to the copperheads venom. But the records will show it a death from complications from a copperhead bite or death from a copperhead bite. The only other death on record from a copperhead was the 14 year old boy that died after being bitten by a copperhead a long time ago. I would say his death was also from anaphylactic shock. If we were to brake all the snake bites down to death from anaphylactic shock I wonder how many of the deaths would be from shock and not the effects of the bite it self ????
Just a thought.....Fabian

The death certificate probally read something like:
Primary cause: Anaphalaxis brough on by snake envenomation.
Yes, the Copperhead will take the "hit" in one of those rare instances. Good that you carry the "ana-kit" with you. One reason I don't keep "spitters" because of the dispersion of lots venom. Sometimes does not take many contacts to become sensitized.
Actually I'm more concerned that I will disturb a hive of bees/hornets in the field and having a reaction than by snakebite. I've flipped more than one log or board and had a nasty surprize.
Best,
Al

Hi
has this gentlemen been exposed to copperhead venom before? The reason I ask is that you can't have a anaphylactic shock with out previous exposure to the antigen.Just out of interest.

I have read some on anaphylactic Shock, my only question is what does Bendryl actually do. Is it the same Bendryl as what you buy over the counter? Could someone also please elaborate on the Epi-pen and the effects also. Being new with hots I still have alot of questions about everything and this is one thing I dont fully understand. I understand what anaphylactic shock is, and that being around the proteins increases you chance of having it happen. All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Epi-Pen is an auto-injector that administers epinephrine—and epinephrine is the definitive emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions. These reactions, called anaphylaxis, can become fatal within minutes if untreated. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology recommends that everyone with an allergy, carry a portable device like the EpiPen auto-injector at all times.
Hope this helps.

The effects of the Epinephrine are relatively short lived and is a hormone that constricts blood vessles; thus raising Blood Pressure while dialating the bronical passages, sort of delays the onset of shock.
Benedryl last longer and "attacks" the problem from a different angle. It blocks/inhibits the Histomine receptors stopping the cascade effect that occurs during a severe allergic reaction.
Best place to get the "chapter & verse" on this topic is on one of the medical info websites.
Best,
Al
