Typically cattle and horses have little trouble w/rattlesnake bites (by little I mean swelling, loss of tissue, etc.) and they can recover well without venom treatment (depending on bite location, and secondary treatment for infection). When bitten on the muzzle is the one that is most dangerous due to massive swelling and possible suffocation. This is a more common occurance as the livestock often run into resting rattlers when feeding. Here in NM (lot's of ranches) it really doesn't occur that often. That number sounds excessively high, even in an area with large numbers of rattlers. I would actually be really surprised if the fatalities are caused by snakes. Animals are A LOT more durable than us weak humans. Not to mention that a horse or cow is about 6 times (or more) bigger than a human. When bitten on an extremity animals heal a lot faster and easier than any 10 humans. Personally I find it doubtful that that many deaths were caused by a rattlesnake. Also, Klauber's work on rattlesnakes states MANY cases of animals recovering on their own without vet attention.

I agree whole-heartedly with David. The only way I can imagine a horse becoming a snakebite fatality in the U.S. is from a facial bite. I was called out to assist on a bite like that several years ago. The horse had to be tubed to make breathing possible.
