One method I was surprised to hear about was watching for them in the trees at night. I was herping with Dr. Michael V. Plummer a couple months back and discussing a few things. Somehow we got on the subject of Opheodrys and he mentioned that he spot-lights for them from boats at night. I kind of laughed a little thinking he was kidding and then he said he wasn't. I asked how many he has gotten in one night, thinking he was going to say about 2 or 3. He said he has gotten over 30 in one night doing that. I guess looking in trees and bushes around lakes is a very productive method for finding them. He said to watch for movement. I still haven't tried this method so don't quote me on it.
I have heard of people looking for arboreal snakes at night this way. I searched a little using this method in southern Az, trying to find the brown vine snakes. Obviously, that is like trying to find a needle in several hay stacks so we didn't find them. But that is what people suggested to do down there.
