Today I caught several WDB's, one of which I am very sure is a pregnant female. I know she shoudl be dropping her young sometime in August, but since I have never bred this species, should I release her, or do I have a good chance of seeing her through this pregnancy and releasing her afterwards, keeping 1 or 2 of the young?

I bought a probably-gravid female atrox at a show in Ozark, MO in May of '03. She never would accept any food offered, and my opinion on her being gravid kept going back and forth. At times she would look thin, at others she would look massive. Sometime around mid-August, I came home from school to find her giving birth to a total of 13 massive neonates. I couldn't believe that this rather small, 2.5 to 3' or so atrox, could hold that many giant babies and continue to appear as thin as she did. All babies were perfectly healthy and went on to find new homes. So from my one experience, w.c. gravid atrox seem to do just fine in captivity. I didn't even give mine anything out of the norm for what was given to my other snakes, just an ambient acceptable temperature with natural nightly drops. The male I bought with her was housed with her the entire time as well. I guess it just goes to show how hardy atrox can be. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience on this subject. Best of luck with yours.
