Are any human antibiotics useful in the treatment of reptiles? Mainly interested in penicillin derivatives such as amoxicillin. I am taking my snake to a reptile vet Saturday and getting baytril from a local vet tomorrow, I'm just curious.
Thanks, John

I am a Vet Tech, and an avid snake collector, usually Baytril and Amikacin...are regularly used antibiotics on reptiles. There are a couple other though.

I think they are the same but the dosages are not the same. I heard a friend who owns a pet store say they were the same. Be very careful of dosages. I'm not sure what a dose that is too large will do to your animals.

Baytril needs to be used more frequently when treating..Every day as opposed to every 3 days with Amikacin..and they are not the same thing!

What exactly are you treating your snake for? Baytril is very effective against Pseudomonas type infections and is safer than Amikacin. Amikacin is an aminoglycocide and therefore (though much safer than Gentomycin, etc.)can cause renal problems in reptiles. Amikacin is, like Baytril, effective against Pseudomonas type infections (Both are indicated for gram negative bacterial infections). If you are to use Amikacin, soak the animal in warm water every couple days to prevent a toxic build up within the kidneys, etc.
If you know exactly what you're treating, it would be easier to help you.
All the best, Carl

The vet gave her Baytril and 4 more injections for me to administer at 48hr intervals. He also dosed her wth flagyl due to protozoa build up. He felt her weakened state from egg laying caused her to be so overcome by infection. Anyway $89.00 and she should be on the way to recovery.
Thanks, John
