I was herping a new ranch in abilene today and upon prying up a slab of concrete (with the help of a fried and some 2x4's, we ran into 5 WDB's colored EXACTLY like a copperhead. Very orange and light brown execpt for the black and white ringed tail. I'm in abilene, tx and I don't think there's any other species of rattlers out here. Is this just an odd color morph or did I stumble upon something not atrox? I'll try to get a picture online asap.

WDB's are extremely variable. There are local populations in SE AZ that are brick red and strongly (for a WDB) patterned. They are much more attractive than your average ruber. I have also seen individuals in the Organ Pipe/Cabeza Prieta area that are coral pink. Within these areas, there is great variation, often in the same litter.

they are pretty with that light to red phase. We caught one last week in alpine that was as red as a red diamond rattler.

I have caught many different color phases of C. atrox. I am in the west Texas area and have caught atrox that were almost white, pink, orange, brown, almost black, red, silver, some with very bold pattern and some with almost no pattern. I have seen 2 copper colored ones this year, one being a couple nights ago and was hit by a car as was the first one. This is my first year in Atrox country and I have already seen many different colors and can't wait to see what my second year will produce. But there are literally 100's of different colors when dealing with C. atrox. I have a 4' female that I have had for the last 4 years that sounds something like what you described. I haven't found one like her out here yet. Some pics of them would be great if you have any!!!
