Not a venomous question, but you guys seem to be knowledgable. I have a male ball python who rarely ever leaves his water bowl. Maybe he's out for an hour or so a day. Is this normal? He has multiple hiding spots, so I don't think he's trying to hide?

It's about 87 on the hot side and 80 on the cold side during the day. The bowl is on the cold side, and he would normally soak for an hour or two sometimes more, but 3 days ago, he started soaking non-stop. Eyes are not clouding over, and belly's not pink, so I don't think he's going into shed. He seems healthy when I take him out and he left the water to eat today, but then returned to the water.

What are you using for a heat source, can he get away from it?
Does he have mites ? is he a long term captive or recent import ? I would check throughly for mites, under scales, around eyes....

That might be a sign of mites. On the other hand I have a scrub pythonthat almost always sits in the water bowl and doesn't have any problems. Tempature may be the reason or mabye he like a lot of humidity.

He's captive bred, heat source is a heat light above the tank, and he has already been to the vet to check for mites, etc after I bought him. On the humidity issue though, the tank I put him in 2 weeks ago has 4 vents around the sides, one on each side, and 2 on the back. The vents are 3" circles about 3 inches abouve the substrate (repti-bark). So if that's letting out a lot of hte humidity, I guess that could be it. If you think it's the case, should i close up the vents, or spray the cage, or just let him do his thing in the water? Thanks for all ya'lls help, it's greatly apreciated.

Has he had a bowel movement ? Warm water relaxes the intesten it he has a blockage and that can be painfull. Run your hand gently along the abdomen and feel for lumps. Try venting the top of the cage too for a beter air circulation. On the cool end cover the light so it becomes fairly dark especially at night. If he moves into the darker area get rid of the heat light and use a heating pad under several cloth wraps sown closed and the pad should be on low appox. 85 degrees.
Change the water often ( every day ) if he is constantly still in it or give him a seperate drinking bowl. Have the next stool speciman checked for internal parasites.
Best of luck
