I will be purchasing snake tongs, probably Gentle Giant, but am having difficulty locating a sturdy safety container. I am not comfortable with the idea of using a bag, since I'll likely be alone when capturing a snake - last night I had to use a shovel to kill a large rattler in our kennel and have sworn never to kill another (4 killed in two years is too many and my neighbors have killed several, too)! I realize that moving the snake outside of a 1/4 mile radius of its territory greatly reduces its chance of survival but I have to believe that odds would be better if I could move it safely to a nearby uninhabited desert area. We live in an area of 1 home/ 1-3 acres outside of Tucson. Any suggestions as to where to find a suitable container would be very much appreciated and I could perhaps construct something.
Thank!
K.

Hi Karen,
I built some boxes out of ply wood and they have hinged tops with rings in the tops of them so I can lower the snake into the box and hook the top with my snake hook to close it. Thus never having to get near the snake or the box to close the top. The boxes are somewhat flat, about 8 inches tall. These I built for hobby though being a collector. They are similar to desk drawers with hinged lids. I hope this helps. Some guys use 5 gallon buckets but I don't like to get near an angry snake to put the lid on by hand.

Karen:
I use large plastic storage boxes that you can get at walmart, target, or K-Mart. They are clear with locking lids that allow you to see where they are inside. Plus you can handle the lids with the Gentle Giant Tongs, safely place and lock them.
I use them to move or hold large un-ruly snakes while I clean/service their cage.
Rural Metro uses the wooden boxes like descibed by "scootertrash" but are heavy and cumbersome.
Good Luck
Al
