I heard Jeff Corwin pronounce Na-jah. If you were to pronounce it in latin it would be Naia.

Before the genus was Naja, it was Naia. To the best of my knowledge, the pronunciation did not change.
Point of interest...Bill Haast's daughter's name is Naia. She was born before the change in spelling.

I've personally always pronounced it "Na-jah," mostly because I think it sounds better than "Naya." I asked an Indian chemistry professor I had to pronounce it, and he said it basically the way I do, but put a little more accent on the J. I tend to go with native pronunciations of a word when the word doesn't come from Latin itself. As far as I know, Naja is Hindu and is a deity in that religion, so to me, the proper pronunciation would be how the Hindus pronounce it.

my english teacher, (who was also a latin teacher) , told me many years ago "there is no J in latin, jesus' name was spelt Iesus on the cross". She also said that if it was not latin, it was probably not the spanish pronunciation of j being almost silent. Hope that helps . long live narjjar

Naja is almost certainly derived from the Sinhalese name for the cobra, which is Naya, pronounced Nah-yah. This fits in with the old-fashioned spelling Naia.
