I have general toxin answers, but didn't want to post until I talk to Dr. Tu. They both contain what's called "gilatoxin", and the amino acid is very similiar. Their ld is almost identical also. Their venom is understudied, so when I see Tu, I will post further info. Is that HerpNut, or HerpNuts????????? Tim

What exactly is gilatoxin? I know gila bites are supposed to be extremely painful, but how does this differ from other venomous reptiles?

According to what I have read it is said that the toxins in Helodermid venom is mainly neurotoxic and slicely hemotoxic.
As you said it is painful alright. I had a bite from H. horridum in my right hand while in Mexico. The pain from the bite was like the one of a bite of an adult White Throat Monitor in tenacy. a few minutes later the pain was mainly at the wrist and the elbow joints.
Avoid Heloderma bites they are quite painful. Handle them with caution at all times.

Gilatoxin is a serine proteinase. Horridum also contains a toxin that causes hemorrhage in internal organs and the eyes. Gilatoxin does not cause this. There is some PLA2 activity, but it is more related to bee venom then the ophidian PLA2 toxins. Monster venom is very different from ophidian venom. I don't believe they have any alpha or beta neurotoxins, or any fraction that might block neuro activity at the NMJ, or at the neuronal juction. As far as I know, there's no typical neuro activity. The pain is caused by edema, similiar to rattlesnakes. Thanks, Tim
