coaxing rattler off trail

I hike a lot in New Mexico and have the occasional rattler to contend with. Recently I cut a hike short in North Carolina because we couldn't get a rattle snake to leave the trail. We didn't try very hard because I figured he had as much right to be there as we. We tossed a few small sticks and pebbles at him. I had expected him to hightail it as soon as we did that but it only made him buzz louder. That was the first time I'd ever been unable to get past a rattle snake. Then a friend here in NM recently killed a rattler (by stoning) because it was on the trail between him and home. I wouldn't like to do that. I would like to know a safe and effective way to get them to move though.
