It is illegal to keep any native non-venomous snakes without a $65 per year educational / scientific permit. However, there are no permits needed to keep any native venomous, including the Eastern Coral snake, the Eastern Diamondback, Southern and Northern Copperheads, Cottonmouths and Pigmy Rattlesnakes.
Any venomous snakes that occur outside of the state of Georgia require an exotic permit - from Black Mambas to Western Diamondbacks.
The permit costs about $235 a year but requires up to $500,000 liability insurance. The only person I know that has this permit pays about $3500 a year.
