Hi!
An area in my garden is apparently copperhead heaven! We have found 7 in the past 5 days. My husband and I appreciate all wildlife and do not harm them, but after having had all three of our dogs bitten from time to time, we do relocate them.
The problem is that every year there are more and more of them to the point where we have found these 7 just this week. In the past we may have seen one or two in the whole summer.
What can we do to keep them away? We take them to the other side of our 20 acre property to a heavily wooded area that has plenty of cover and a little stream. Are they coming back, or are there simply lots of babies that are now growing up?
We love to watch these beautiful creatures, but the dogs like to bother them and don't learn from experience. We are also a bit afraid of stepping on them in the dark, cool evenings we have here in the Carolinas.
Are we right to relocate them, or should we take more *GULP* drastic measures?

Oct. 10, 2006 - I also live in the Carolina's and I find one way to keep copperheads from biting me or my pets is to send them to 'copperhead heaven'. I've sent 5 there in this past month. Who needs a bite. I just wish I knew what would kill them so I wouldn't have to. I don't need anything posionous in my yard.

The best way to keep copperheards or any venomus snake out of your yard or garden is to elimite what atrtacts them. Ie. Mice
Keeping the grass trimed, high weeds take care of, any brush piles, or debree piles anythin like that cleaned up an out of the way elimites palces where mice an rats can hide an nest an thus attract these beautiful snakes.
Tongs.com sells a snake repellent that may work, I have never tried it as venomus or not i never mind them around my house even with my dogs an cats but I tend to be alil strange myself lol.

I know this is an old topic, but I noticed the original poster mentioned being in "the Carolinas". If you still have a copperhead issue, please reply here. I am located in Western North Carolina and would gladly come collect them and remove the copperheads for you. I'll be looking for some this spring/summer, and you seem to have too many. Sounds like a win win deal to me. It'll save me a lot of searching. Reply here and I'll give you contact info if your not too far from me. Thanks.
