Chris Harper wrote an excellent article in the SHHS newsletter "Rattle" in Fall or summer of 2003. It was on anti-venom prodution and mentioned a Mexican company "Bioclon" (possibly the same mentioned in this article) that had a better antivenom for snake bites than ours. It was $50 a vial and worked a lot better than Crofab. It worked better on venomous bites from our species and they only used Bothrops asper and Crotalus durissus venom.
Bottom line, American medical system is way too expensive and often doesn't have high quality products. If you get bit by a venomous snake in Brazil, the treatment is free. In the U.S., you are looking at around $15,000 or more. And our doctors suck at venomous bites. I would not want to go to an American hospital for a snake bite.
