Ryan,
Please take this with a grain of salt (a famous Matt quote). Your question as to the snake's identification has been answered. I would also like to point out, that our Society truely does not like to view reptiles in such a manner. I do understand your situation. However, even with that being said, a more "cropped" down picture, might have exuded a warmer response from our members. Being that you are on a research expedition, some latitude will be extended. Our Mission Statement clearly states, our main goals are to provide a "FORUM" for the information exchange on the ecology, natural history and behavior of venomous reptiles. Also that we educate the general public on the benefits of venomous reptiles in nature. With these few key elements in mind, I emplore you to in the future, take a bit time to phrase and disguise questions and photos for our use. Do take care while on your trek through Ecuador, as the land and it's many creatures can pose a viable threat.
My intent with this answer was only to show you our bigger picture. Take it as nothing more. Your safety is always the most paramount. Trust your gut and watch where you step. Those snakes that were killed could only be the tip of the iceberg.
Please accept our apologies for the ungracious reception you received and come back to get more information in the future regarding any reptiles you might encounter, or just have an interest in.
Thank you again for your interst in SHHS and the info we've provided,
Matt Johnston

I have a question, why are some members on this site so set on judging somone by saying that they are the ones doing the killing? I would tell you that blaming somone on being a killer when they have already told you they did not do it is very judgmental and childish. If you would have botherd to read the later post Ryan enterd, you would have seen that he did not kill the snake. I have never told anyone this because its part of my past I am not proud of but, at one time I worked evry year with a Rattlesnake Roundup here in the state of AL. For the past 12 years I have had nothing to do with these Roundups, the thing that changed my mind was the fact that evry year it got harder and harder to find Rattlers for the Roundup it made me relise that the population was droping and that what we were doing was the couse of it. Ever sence then I have been studying these strange and beautiful animals and have come to love these animals. So if ppl on here want to get judgmental I deserve to be done this way for my past also.......Happy herper Wally

I am an officer of this site, and I normally to not verbally attack people who post here, but I have to say you showed very poor judgement in posting pictures of snakes you killed on our site. Liken that to me posted pictures of some ancient ruins I found then blew up. I post pics of the wreckage on you site and ask you guys “gee, I wonder what ancient people built this thing I just blew up?” Don’t be mad, I did it for safety, someone could have tripped and fell.

Again, I apologize to those of you who were offended. I only posted the second picture so people could get a better look. For the moderators, feel free to edit my initial post and remove the second picture.
Thanks to those who were helpful in identifying the viper.
Thanks to those who read my posts and understood the situation.

I said what I truly believed ALA. That wasnt childish for jumping on him. I strongly dont agree with killing animals for know reason. He didnt kill the snakes but he also didnt stop them from being killed. Being childish is more like being in your 30s and still not being able to spell.

Wally is right, jumping on someone for such a post isn't in the best interests of anyone who comes to this site for information. Irregardless of whether Wally can spell or not, he does have KNOWLEDGE that is best welcomed rather than shunned. We need to keep these posts as Informational as possible. This isn't a ring for wrestling. Please do your best to keep the information as a reply to the originator of the post, and make it factual information, not a lambasting session. That will benefit all who come here for guidance. We don't want to make ourselves seem as though we don't know what we are talking about. Wally has some valuable experience, as I'm sure Jeremy does. Please play nice and provide your insights into Ryan's question regarding identification.
Once again, Ryan, I apologize for the outbursts. With that being said, I'll sign off now.
Thanks,
Matt
