once again im going to ask some questions about going to the everglades this christmas. im going between christmas and new years eve. right now its in the mid 70s there according to online weather sites. i will be on the western side (coming from tampa). will snakes be active at this temp? would the temp drop too far at night to road cruise? any spots someone could let me in on? anyone familiar with this area is welcome to drop me an email with some info. thanks again guys.

Keep an eye on weather.com and look at the detailed information for each day. Try to do your herping when temperatures peak during each day. Keep a thermometer with you, and note the temps if and when you see herps.

cottonmouth,
you found a wild burmese python in the everglades? i have heard of them surviving and breeding in the everglades but are they common enough now that they can easily be found? if there becomes a big population of pythons couldnt it hurt our ecosystem?

I would definently say that even a mild population of Burm's could upset the balance in FL, or any other state with a climate that could suport them for that matter. Its a shame that so many Species have been introduced to FL. Lets hope it dont do to much damage to such a fragile enviroment......Happy herping Wally

I went down past tampa this past weekend and the temp was in the early 70s. We only saw a moccasin and a few black racers. Youll probably find something if you go further south because supposedly there active year round down there. Cool

some say that they might acually be a good thing for alligator control and racoon control which are causing more problems that anything for the american croc. Burms go after rodents and smaller gators, but don't seen to cause many problems for birds other than water foul, but I don't really know about the subject. I do know that they are in thick now and even the most experienced biologist say that they are here for good.

We were down in oct and found a young DOR burmese, so I would say that they are pretty common now.
