Hey Wally,
We have the buss sized cat fish myth here too! Just happens to be at the same lake as the water moccasins that got the water skier! Summersville Damn. Oh, and this is West Virginia with those water moccasins, too. LOL

one other mith here is that the Slow Worm(Anguis fragilis - fam. "Anguidae", Subord."Lacertilia" or "Sauria", a lizard of course) is blind and is the most venomous snake in Romania. The truth is that theese guys don`t even bite so I have no ideea how the mith was started.

Recently I was working at a construction site and saw that the superintendent's license plate said "RATTLER". So I inquired about his plate hoping to find another herp enthusiast, but when he told me he hunts and kills them for their skins or to make belts and so forth, my heart melted(and fists clenched). I of course was very courteous and polite wen I told him I'm a keeper. He then told me some "facts", one of which was the story about some lake that became "infested" with moccasins and people started dying from snakebite so they closed the lake to swimmers.

What`s more tragic is this: My gimnazium teacher taught us in the 8th grade I think that the Green Lizard(Lacerta viridis) is very venomous and very agressive. It bites the legs of people who walk bear-foot and injects it`s venom that can cause aughfull head aches and nausia, vomiting etc. It can also spitt blood threw it`s eyes my teacher said.
Once she was talking about sharks, and she said that the blue shark lives in our Black Sea, and that it so ferocious that it is called the Sea-Dog(romanian term for the Dog Shark) and that it reaches 6 meters(20 ft)in lenght and is very agressive twords man. Of course all of her facts were false: 1. The Dog-Shark is the only shark that lives in the Black Sea and get`s up to 4 ft in lenght. 2. The blue shark reaches only 2-3 meters(7-9ft.) and is a completely different species. With education like this it`s no wonder that people believe all this rubbish. Take care of the new generations and give them a proper herpetological education. Alex S.

Did you all know we have Puff Adders in WV? Very deadly. i think they are referring to hognose snakes. Black racers will chase you, then stand up and bite you in the chest. We have a lot of cottonmouths here too, especially in small creeks. Snapping turtles won't let go if they bite you, until they hear thunder. There are a lot of stories of people who knew divers investigating the Silver Bridge collapse in the 60's that were scared to go back into the water because of the catfish that could swallow humans. I also had a guy tell me that in Douglas Lake in Tenn. there are catfish that aren't just as big as Voltzwagens, but can actually swallow them. I'm gonna have to start using bigger bait.

Better fours years later than never right... ;-)
I always liked how now matter what species someone claims to have seen it's always 6 feet long...
"I saw a 6 foot copperhead in my backyard last year."
