So they have identified more than two strains of amelanistics now! Yippee! Thanks Phantom. I KNEW the genetics would be more complicated than that.
Albinos are uncommon because they lack the cryptic camouflage coloration that protects individuals. These individuals often don’t reach sexual maturity because they are beacons to predators. However, many recessive genes that are harmful when expressed provide a boon to a heterozygous individual. A human example is the sickle cell trait. A heterozygous individual has a partial natural immunity to malaria, but a homozygous recessive individual has a life threatening blood disease.
Reptiles have 4 different pigments to mammal’s melanin. That makes their recessive phenotypes so much more interesting.
