I am doing a research project on rattlesnake bite victims and was wondering if anyone has heard of incidents of rattlesnakes biting during their normal hibernation period? Or if any have been seen outside of their dens during hibernation?

I know that timber rattlesnakes do come out of hiberantion on occasion if it gets over 55 and is in a warm spot without wind. I know that most snakes might come out if it gets over 60. They only just sit in the warm sun and go back under before it gets cold.

I have heard of bites occurring during hibernation, but I really don’t know what the details are. I would think if someone wandered into a den, they mite get a surprise. If someone went into a Western Diamondback Rattler den, you never know ......Be safe, happy herping Wally

The biggest canebrake I've ever caught was in GA in the middle of January. It was sunning just outside its den and I caught it and moved it into a better position for some photos, and then released it back where I found it.I didn't have a way to measure it but I know it was over 5 feet. But they do come out of hibernation if it warms up enough and therefore I'm sure bites could happen.A DNR officer later told me while discussing the one that I caught, that some people do get bit durring warm spells in the winter simply because they don't expect to see a snake at that time of the year, and therefore don't keep an eye out for them. Merry Christmas, Marty
