Hi Luke,
The best starter cobra is definately, somone elses! Cobras can be very flighty, bitey and down right aggressive snakes which get pretty darn big and of cource, can put you into a grave, several times over. My personal opinion is that one must spend a good ammount of time working around Naja, learning their behavior and personality quirks, under supervision of a well trained keeper of cource and getting a wide range of knowledge from many different specimens to kinda get a data base in your head of the different temperments cobras can show before even contemplateing gertting one. Then one should start off with a neo of one of the usualy, less aggresive species and grow with it. Personally, I do not own any sp of Naja but am in the process of obtaining knowledge to eventully make the endevor and I have been working around them for a few years now and still dont think im quite ready. It is a serious move to bring Naja into a captive enviroment and you should think long and hard before makeing the dession after of cource, you have worked with a few specimens from different sp and find which one you like the most and feel most comfortable around. For me, that would be Naja kouathia but I have observed probally 40 different specimens over the last couple of years and am not really fimilar with any of the others. Yours could be the same or maybe another sp.
I suggest you find a keeper near you who keeps Naja and ask if you can hang around and observe him doing his daily rotine. Then pick his brain as much as posible.
Welp, I hope this helps!
Take care and good luck.
Be safe,
Jeremy

I did the whole cobra thing for about a year and a half. I got an albino naja kaouthia. It was a good experience, but I've never had a captive animal that seemed to resent being caged up so much. It absolutly hated me and anyone else near the cage. I got a lock box and a sturdy vision cage for safety and it usually stayed in the box 95% of the time. I considered it relatively safe for that fact. I finally got rid of it b/c a). it creeped my roommates out and b) it didn't seem to ejoy life in a cage. If you are going to get a cobra you should understand that there is no truely suitable species for captivity. I would make sure you have a large cage with plenty of hiding spaces and give the snakes privacy. After my experience I would conclude that there are many other hots that do better in captivity than elapids. Maybe you should try a coral cobra or shield nose first.

I deal with sevaral Species of Cobras and I have found that every one of them have thier own little personality Problems. While some say the Naja kaouthia is Very Flighty and Aggressive I have some that are Super Fast and Really Mean and I have some that are as gental as a Kitten. (Please remember Kittens are gental "Most" of the time BUT can still get a wild hair and Nail You) I also have a Black Forest Cobra that has never once give me a hood and I have one that would love to kill me and Just keeps looking for the chance to do so. The only advice I can give you is. You are dealing with a snake that is SUPER SMART and Remember he/she is watching you as much as you are watching Him/her. and even the "Tamest" of Naja can all of a sudden decide to Rip your head off. This is a snake you have to Respect and Fear at once. and I know others say the Juvinile Naja is the way to go. I am just the oppisite of that I think the Adult is the way to go If you are starting with kaouthia (Kaouthia is my Favorite) and I will tell you why before someone Jumps on and Reames me out. I have never seen a Neo Naja that wasnt Just SUPER FLIGHTY and These things will jump out of there cage and Take off across the floor before you know what happend. (Note Some adults will also do the same.) and if you are running around a room trying to catch this snake it puts you and the snake in Danger as well as Everyone else if you dont catch it. and Adult Naja seem to handle a Hook alittle better. But there are exceptions to this rule ie. Black Forest, Large African Species and even some asian species. all and all I feel adult Naja are easer to handle and seem to be a bit calmer overall than the Juvinile Naja of any species.
I could go on and on about this but I will shut up now.
Good Luck
Justin

I forgot to say what I started that Long @$$ thing for. This is my answer to your question.
If you want to keep Naja and you have the experiance to do so. Just take your time and look at all of the Naja species and Study them get to know the one you like the best and Go on a search to find one. Look for one that you like and get it.
I will tell you there is one thing I like about the Naja That I dont like about Vipers and Pit-Vipers and that is. When A Cobra stands up and Spreads that hood it make you realize your own mortality every time you see it and becouse of this People seem to approach Cobras with alittle more Caution that other snakes and with that hood They will keep you in your Place Just head this Warning...
These are Very rewarding snakes to work with and that is why I deal with them on a daily basis. I still have a few of my old Favorites But the Cobra have stole my heart for good.
Your the only one that can pick the Cobra you want so Be Patient and Pick the one YOU want.
Be Good
Justin

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID BY THE PEOPLE THAT ALREADY RESPONDED TO THIS POST. ALL NAJA SPECIES CAN BE VERY AGGRESSIVE AND VERY FAST. SO MY ADVICE FOR A STARTER COBRA IS A VENOMOID. I REALLY DONT BELIEVE IN VENOMOIDS BUT THEY ARE A GREAT WAY TO LEARN. IF YOU CAN MANAGE TO KEEP FROM GETTING BITTEN BY THE VENOMOID OVER THE PERIOD OF A YEAR OR SO THEN YOU MAY BE READY TO TRY YOUR LUCK WITH A TRUE "HOT" COBRA. OR AT LEAST THATS HOW MY MENTOR DEMANDED THAT I LEARN TO DEAL WITH COBRAS. GOOD LUCK AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK. I WILL HELP THE BEST I CAN.
