Ive mentioned this before about the dots on the back of copperheads and some other pit vipers heads,now Ive noticed that the black tail rattlesnake has the dots also but they are much bigger.

Im not sure. It has to have some use or so many different species wouldnt have the same markings in the same place on their head.

Certain localities will also have varying numbers of spots in the same area of the body. More specifically the variation of spots on Canebrake heads. Jared Watts
