Yes, Jim is one of the few people that posts on this forum that I consider a "Real Expert" who's opinnon is well repected by many.
Jim handles/milks more snakes in a week than most people work in a lifetime. The Kentucky Reptile Zoo's reputation as first class Reptile educational facility as well as venom lab is understated. Few people have the knowledge and skill to create such an institution, Jim is one of those people.
His stance regarding the fool/menace, known as , Austin Stevens, Is supported by many Herpetologist on this and other Herpetology forums.
Cheers!

Cool you know i had to check him out when i heard he was a real expert
You cant take just one persons opinion anymore. As to the AS issue why
does everyone hate the man so much? I mean aside from the overacting.
I've never seen him hurt an animal on an episode. Hell i've seen O'shea &
Brady Barr do some things i thought was harmfull to the animals. Oh yeah
lets try to keep cheap shots at one another out of here. I thought this
website was profesional. That is why i registered here.

Austin Stevens does in fact damage the animals he works with on his 'programs' He corners and harasses and tortures the animals the entire time he is using them. Whipping them around carelessly, dropping them, using poor technique with his tongs causing injury. The thing that "average joe" does not understand is simply put, reptiles. Average joe does not know when a snake is tormented for such a long time that it is beyond exhaustion. Being that tired is in essence a death sentence for a wild animal. However, some of his encounters are captive animals. The tongs break ribs and causes spinal damage. The falls are obviously dangerous. The biggest problem most of "us" have with him is his incorrect information that he uses. He tells flat out lies. Basically, he is not a professional and has very little experience working with those animals in the past and even less knowledge of the animals themselves. He touts his show as educational and average joe will defend that because they don't know what is true and what is not. If he is going to have a show he should at least use proper info and treat the animals a hell of a lot better.
The people that defend Austin Stevens really should do their own research and find answers on their own. As a fan will never believe ill will of their idol.
Aside from that, James Harrison IS truly an expert in this field of study!

Robert:
If you want a professional atmosphere maybe this is not the place your looking for..anonymous posters are somewhat disruptive but not always a problem.
There are many sharp people regarding snakes & there husbantry, however, thats where it pretty much ends. If that's all you're after, you'll get what you came for.
Many of the philosophical conversations go down the toilet because strong opinions voiced are seen as, dictatorial and not editorial as they were intended. On the tough issues, we seldom agree as a group, not just here but on other Herp forums too. Read through some of the old posts and see what I mean.
Just the nature of the beast.

One thing that I've seen people do(not only austin stevens) that is harmful to the animal is they pin the snakes head down in the "death grip" and milk it in the field for no reason. The snake obviously needs their venom and it shouldnt be wasted for the viewers pleasure. I understand other milking for lab work or antivenin but just milking them for nothing other than shock is a waste. I do agree with some things that austin stevens does. he obviously has a passion for reptiles. Alot of people on one forum shot him down and said that he lied about catching a copperhead in apalachicola but I watched the show and he clearly stated that he caught the copperhead in south georgia. Alot of his shows are fake though. He always finds the snake on the last day. He always almost gets bit. The show always starts out in a life or death situation. In the middle of the show a complication that almost ruins his expedition. But......he does get people interested in wildlife. When they are interested they will research and find the truth. Only the idiots will copy the dangerous things he does. He should rething his staging though. Somethings are just rediculous, unneccasary, and down right retarded. Ill watch every episode though.

AS is a photographer. I think his show is just to show people the action side of the business. I mean I know its probably all staged although I have not seen a behind the scenes AS yet, & probably won’t. But really think of it as things that could happen in the field. As far as this anonymous post if you are calling me an average joe your sadly mistaken. Also if you can’t even leave your name you are’nt shit to any of us. As you can see my name is on every post I leave, & I could careless of your opinion of me. Anyway if AS was closing the pillstrom tongs on the animals he catches I might agree with you that he is hurting them. Don’t get me wrong he is an overactor & his show is very dramatic. Also only an idiot would freehand a cobra on his knees, but yes I think the show is entertaining. Just watch it for what it is nothing more than a TV show.
