Hi,
Ok this is my second post, and heres the DIsclaimer.
Im not a Keeper of any snakes, and dont claim to know very muck about them.
Ive read about this new Tongs that are on the market, and Allen Hunters review of them, so why then do folk use hooks, freehandle, etc when they can use these tongs instead, is it the challenge, the freedom or what.
Also how heavy are the big fellas, ie Gaboons, Puff addres etc, and when there on the hook, does it feel real heavy, has anybody ever dropped or let the hook slip due to there wieght.
I have a weee look in here practically every day when work is slack, and replies are eagerly awaited.
cheers.
Oh another thing, this appears to be the only forum i can find, if i shouldnt be posting into the Experts formu, appologies.

Hi Ian, this is the plase to ask questions and hopefully they will be answered. I use hooks because it is much easier on myself and the snake. Whenever you use tongs you risk injury to the snake, especialy the older pilstrom type tongs. It also tends to make the snake very angry and usually harder to handle because they don't like be restrained in such a manner. Big gaboons are usually moved with a strong hook and tailing them at the same time. Hope this helps answer your question. Oh yea I might add that very few people are foolish enough to freehandle a venomous snake in a way that would let it's head anywhere within strikeing distance....Eric

Hey Eric,
Ian got me interested in seeing what snake you have on your profile. After veiwing the pic I must advise, treat that horrible, hairy growth coming out of the poor animals tail!!! Its replusive!! Oh, wait a min, thats you. Ooops, my bad! LOL J/K brotha!! Beautiful
westy man!! Nice colors and really nice size! Needs me one of those!.
Also, to Ian, you were right. Thats a Western Gaboon viper aka adder, latin name Bitis gabonica rhinocerus. There is another sub of Gaboon viper called the East African Gaboon viper or Bitis gabonica gabonica. If you like being tested on hots I offer the fallowing question for you to figure out:
What differentiates a West African Gaboon form and East African one?
If you go to the Viperade photo gallery on this site there are many pics of both subspecies, some labled correctly with their latin names and some not. Find the ones that are and compare them. There is a very obvious difference which should be reviled upon close inspection.
Well guys, back to hell, uh, I mean work:-)
Take care and have a good weekend!
Peace,
Jeremy

I've had 2 gaboons for 3 and 3.5 years. It seems like they gain weight every time I have to clean out the cage. I hook and tail them but almost kinda have to brace the hook handle on my wrist to support all the weight for my female and she's only like 3 feet long. I was just thinking about it the other day and how tough its going to be once she's 4 or more feet

Howdeeeee...
Well Erm, let me see...
to tell u the truth west and east gaboon's look very similair to me..
I would hazard a guess that the Ease as a small horn kinda thing..and slightly lighter in colour..
But in the pics i did see one where in it's mouth it had a wee tube kinda thing..whats that??whats i for??..
and i always wondered..does having suck large fangs on the beastee..does that cause problems for them..do they retract there fangs..if not..do they have probs biting themselves..specially in the mouth..
I once read somewhere that London zoo had a gaboon and the keepers came in one morning and found it dead after implaing itself on its own fangs..
Alos do Boomslangs have a red\orange spot on there noses..cos i havce some pics from a snake farm in Zimbabwe, and theres a snake like that and i alwas thought it was a boomslang..My ISP cancelled my accnt, ( Support accnt and i no longer work there), so ill have to try and find them from somewhere and upload them for u guys to have a look..
later..and cheers..
