I understand that king cobras eat only other snakes. Suppose a hungry king is put in a pen with a rattler. If the king bites the rattler, he's going to get a very very painful bite in return. Will this happen? Or will the king recognize the rattler as dangerous and back into his corner?

King Cobras readily eat other venomous snakes, including russels vipers, Indian cobras, and even smaller king cobras. They sometimes get bitten eating these animals. I believe a hungry king cobra would eat a rattlesnake just as quickly as any other smaller snake, venomous or not, although I have not tried this experiment. JohnZ

The bronx zoo have kept kings and gave them large western diamondbacks. Ironically one of the Rattlesnakes bit a king and they had to give the King Anti-venom.
