Okay folks, I'm sitting down this week and going through the last of the applications and resumes for this position (I have an opening in the Bird Department too)with my Herp Supervisor and going to start lining up interviews. Here's the deal, it's a job, simple as that folks. It's not up here for debate. It's not up here for me to argue the reputation of the herp department at my zoo past present or future. It's not up here to argue zoo salaries, AZA policies, anti-venene avilablity in zoos vs. the private sector, or any other assorted item that comes along. It's pretty cut and dry. I need a herper to come in and work the department. One that can do the job, grow with the department as we expand and build the new herpetarium and quadruple the size of the zoo itself over the next 10-15 years. Exciting stuff actually. But, a zoo herp job nonetheless.
I can give more details via private e-mail, but I need any resumes and applications right away as I need to fill this position immediately. What I don't need is a bunch of smarta$$ remarks from the anonymous peanut gallery. Here is the posting and you may e-mail me for more info at aquaherp1@aol.com Thank you :
Doug Hotle

I'll probably retire before Karl, but don't really want to grab a 40 hour a week job when I do. For those who are interested, this does sound like a fine position. I did not get paid particularly well for the four years I spent working the reptile park at Lion Country Safari, but I wouldn't take a bunch of money now for the experience it gave me. I'd venture to say that whoever nails this position down will wind up being the better for it.

Sorry to offend, and it does look to be a great job but what is it with zoos, even the huge zoos and the little pay for a highly qualified person. In life we have to make enough to survive and $8.00 an hour or $1,300 a month doesn't come close. Kids at Sheezt are making $9.00 an hour, and I know; tell them to go to sheetz but that's not the point.

Okay folks, before this gets out of hand, the opening is no longer available, or at least the Zoo has received all the applications they intend to consider. Any other traffic concerning a job at the Abilene Zoo should be emailed directly to the originator of the thread and no other posts are necessary in this thread.
Thanks,
Karl
