Howard & Others...
Even though this is America many do not have affordable health care. Therefore a trip to the ER is an expensive proposition no matter what the problem.
Lawmakers on the federal level are busy sticking their noses where it does not belong, rather taking care of more inportant issues. Like wise, State lawmakers would rather spend the time writing "feel good" laws "to protect the public" from people who like to keep venomous snakes. When more people are injured by dogs, horses, goldfish & fruitbats on an annual basis.
Keep in mind a simple uncomplicated snakebite can cost someone up to $30,000 including a few vials of antivenom. Not all of it will be covered by insurance especially if they find out it was a captive specimen.
As far of accounts of ER visits for Copperhead bites I just know of a few. One recient case I learned of that required A/V also left a disfugured finger as a result. A/V does little to stop local tissue destruction although it was though that Cro-Fab would do this, however, no clinical data suggests this is indeed true. With this in mind, I would go to the ER myself but would not allow the doctors to "steam roll" me into something I did not think was clinically needed, like A/V for instance. I would NEVER let a DAMN Surgeon near me to perform a Faciotomy, a medical proceedure which has come under suspicion for causing more damage than the venom. Go to www.venomdoc.com or email me for a copy of the paper, Thanks BGF!!) I keep the paper with my emergency protocols to stuff in their face if references are required.
I know of all too many bites that turned into tragedies for the MD's lack of knowledge and too much ego when treating snakebite. Have Names & phone #'s of people who really know the snakes ride "shotgun" on the doc's and tell them why this person will speak for you if your not able. I suggest you talk to your personal doctor and go over bite treatment proceedures with them, You're gonna be saving your own hide in the long run.
