No, I didn't delete anyone else's post. I deleted mine and reposted it with some added points.
I don't think my snakes are racist. They don't mind if something else bit their prey. Another snake's mouth can't be any dirtier than a rat itself.
As for the Newbie, that was a barb aimed at someone who's been posting on a thread unrelated to this one, but whom, I feel will read this one. It's kind of an inside joke, and not at all malicious. For I am not.

Greg: It is not a matter of raceism, ( I did not know snakes could be racest ) it is a matter of husbandry. Of course, the other snake is going to eat the rat! The problem is that the venom injected into the rat by the Cottonmouth can be very, very diferent than that of the Rattlesnake. Different peptides, enzymes, protiens, etc. The Rattlesnake is set up to digest his own venom that is inside of something he bit. But he is not set up to digest the venom of a Cottonmouth. And the same applys in reverse. If you must feed a like that, then feed a Cottonmouth bit rat to another Cottonmouth, and not to a Rattlesnake. In theory, the digestive system of different snake Genera might fully break down all of the other animals venom, but it just might not, and could be absorbed through the gut, and kill the other snake. If you really want to salvage the rats, get a pet alligator, and feed them to him, as he designed to eat Cottonmouths, Rattlesnakes, Rats, etc. Venom and all.

John,
I've always figured it's best from crotalid to crotalid. I would not, for example, send prey from Naja to crotalus, or vice versa. I have never had any snake die from this, or even get sick. Maybe I'm rolling the dice, but I don't waste prey ever. If this is considered bad husbandry, this is the first I've heard of it. I'm actually rather astounded, as this has always been presented to me as an "old school" way of getting things done. I don't consider it bad advice. If there is a chance that a snake could be harmed from this, the odds must be thousands to one against. Because in 8 + years, nothing bad has happened from it.
To those who read this, please take it for what you think it's worth. Know that there are those who don't hold this practice of mine in high regard. Know also that I respect the reasoning behind this view point. But realize too, that I'm honest when I tell you that my snakes have never been harmed by this. HOWEVER! It's possible that yours might.
