Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. I had a chance to acquire a cb from a breeder last year, but passed as I knew little about the snake, except that it had long fangs, got fairly long, and was very rare. I posted a question about the venom and WW responded as it being atrox-like in composition. WW, what happened to your friend when he was bitten and how did he make out? Was it a large specimen? Al, I usually spell out the whole genus and species and whatnot, I forgot that b. implies a gazillion genera. However, if I did then we might not have gotten that schooling about the confusion of the bothrops complex...lol. My head is spinning.
Thanks,
Tom

Matt, I remember seeing one of the fangs you had that your female dropped. It was impressive, dwarfed the timber fang you gave me.

My friend, who was bitten by a large adult, would have died without a heavy dose of AV. He suffered serious damage to his hand, some of it permanent, including partial lack of sensation and recurrent swelling, presumably due to buggered lymphatics. He was in a bad way for months as a result of that bite.
In a series of bites in Ecuador, the most serious case who lived was again a bite from a B. taeniatus that resulted in an amputation of a leg at the hip.
They are amazing snakes (the pattern, especially on the head, is one of the most bizarre things you will ever see - kind of like a stretched Zhaoermia mangshanensis), but not to be trifled with.
Cheers,
Wolfgang

Another thing about these guys is how deceptively long they are. Its very very easy to grossly underestimate the length (which is easy enough to do with any Bothrops). First one I milked I guessed was about 60-70 cm. By the time I was done getting it out of the cage, it was around 1.7 m!!!
Cheers

I agree with you TJ...we got a great wealth of information on that one...This thread turned into an excellent one. Again good question!
Thanks BGF & WW...for your comments, they really are nasty buggers. I agree there pattern is very much like mangshanensis. The pictures in Gumprecht's Asian Pitviper book are fresh in my mind. It's almost fractal like in nature...very cool.
Cheers,
Al

BGF is spot on with the "deceptively long" observation - I recall using a pocket hook to hook out a tiny coiled up B. bilineatus from a cage - as the creature uncurled, started to head up the hook and to take a decidedlly worrying interest in my knuckles, I was somewhat disconcerted tor ealise that it was nearly a metre long and I was more than easily within strike range. They are built almost like Imantodes - very un-viper-like.
Cheers,
Wolfgang

Glad to hear your friend is doing alright WW. I've heard that they can be deceptively long also, not a nice surprise with a small hook. Thanks again for the info, they are awesome snakes.
Take care.

...I've done that a few too many times with Bothrops, especially juveniles. I'd rather not revisit those horror stories, but that Tequila Bry mentioned, may be put to good use! ;-) Some of these seem to be quite prehensile with their tails too(venezuelensis and colombiensis to name two) and can be a handful, especially when they don't want to let go of the hook.
The most psychotic snake I've known, are the yellow phase Bothrops colombiensis...YIKES!!!
