Just a herping report to break up the encroaching Winter monotony...
So here I am herping in Guam. It has been in the high 90s every day and humid as a Georgia afternoon thundershower in mid-July.
I have walked the treelines for the past two nights and have found quite a few herps.
Unfortunately my current mode of access does not allow me to upload my photos so that may have to wait a few months.
Guam - so far:
1 Brown Tree Snake - already collected by a fenceline trap (still a beautiful young snake)
40 or 50 geckos of varying color/texture
40 or 50 Bufo marinus of rather large dimensions
2 large frogs (looked like US Bronze Frogs)
4 or 5 anoles which looked like US Green Anoles
3 or 4 skink-like lizards with incredible speed and a reddish tint to their tails (no pictures of these)
TMTC HUGE Coconut Crabs (I have a picture of one of these 3 feet up a chainlink fence trying to get into one of the snake traps to get at the live bait mouse inside)
Praying Mantises and various species of spiders are all over the place.
I am still looking for an untrapped Brown Tree Snake to photograph but at least this trip I did find one.
Karl
PS I'll post the pictures when I can. KHB

Hy Karl,
Guam sounds like a blast.
You should suggest that instead of killing all those snake they should catch and export them to hobbiests. This way, they`ll also make a buck or two ;)
Best regards, Alex S.

I guess it doesn't go without saying that the reported 50,000 Brown Tree Snakes per acre on Guam is clearly a slight exaggeration (something that NEVER happens with reptiles).
It also should be noted that the United States classifies the Brown Tree Snake as "Injurious Wildlife" and to get caught with one in the US can cost you a $50,000 fine and imprisonment.
I am just looking to take pictures.

Man...I had no ideea that the U.S. has such a classification of animals. Anyway, I would love to have a couple of them. They wouldn`t survive a winter in Romania, that`s for sure.
Anyway, enjoy what`s left of your shore leave and happy herping !
Best regards, Alex S.

sorry but brown tree snakes are all over guam not rare at all we find then out on our field exercises all the time and if you herp near any of the jungle edges along most military installation you can fine them quite easy.
Then againg just walk the perimeter fence line and check the snake traps on the fence itself.

Hey Gerald.
I never said that they were rare.
I just pointed out that 50,000/acre and even the latest 13,000/acre reported numbers are a little overinflated. In fact, the local news addressed that just last night.
I got here on Friday and have walked the edges of the treelines, the fencelines and checked all of the traps that I could find at the Polaris Point installation and parts of the NAVMAG.
I have seen one snake.
I will keep looking, of course.
I will be leaving soon but will be back before June sometime. Are you on Guam? If you are, would it be possible to hook up and you could show me some wild Brown Tree Snakes?
My email is Buzztail1@hotmail.com
I won't be able to access my email account or even respond to it until the next time I make port and find an Internet Cafe but if you send me a number or email address, I will get back in touch with you.
Thanks,
Karl

Sorry pal no longer stationed there but try your search around the outer edge of anderson afb on the east side.
Naval station exchange side has a good record of collection cages being a hot spot.

For what it's worth, I just found 5 in one night on the fences around Polaris Point.
Just like everywhere else in the world, snake hunting is a hit or miss thing dependant on weather, the moon, the humidity, etc.
Thanks for trying to help.
