Well, here goes...
He is obviously experienced in working with snakes, no doubt about that. He also appears to be pretty knowledable about them as well.
However, the way his show is presented is what bothers me...it's much like a action movie than a documentary on animals. There have been episodes where he "unexpectedly" goes over a waterfall in his raft, yet there are camera crews set up in multiple locations at the bottom of the waterfall to get Hollywood style shots of his perilous descent down the waterfall. Obviously the cameramen anticipated his plunge.
In addition, some of his finds are OBVIOUSLY staged...like the East African Gaboon viper he located in WEST Africa! It may have been the other way around, a W.A. gaboon in East Africa, but the point is the snake's range wasn't where he "found" it.
I watch his show if I catch it, he definitely "finds" some great animals, but I don't particularly care for him.

they shouldnt show people stuff like that it give us and snakes bad names i mean i know its not if but when you get bit when dealing with any wild animal but when they sit there and show him doing crazy things just to get that perfect shot or pestering animals it makes it look like anyone can go out there and do it and not get hurt or get the animals hurt. they should have one of those wanings do not try this

People keep bringing up the fact that he found an east african gaboon in west africa when it is a fact that east african gaboons live in parts of west africa also. East Africans definetly live in St. Lucia Estuaries. I know because I just got back from Africa last week and I found 3 gaboons there.

He is definitely over dramatic, and he doesn't really show the respect that the snakes deserve.....swinging onto a gaboon viper that is in the water isn't the brightest thing to do. But he does have some cool snakes at times. He does promote conservation, so I can't fault him for that. And he does have a pretty cool accent, much different than the people here in NY.
Not on my top ten list, but he is entertaining at times, then again, so isn't a cat when it chases it's tail.

The man Austin Stevens isn't the same as the t.v Austin Stevens. I have only met him a couple of times and he has always been forthcoming and pleasant. The t.v. kind of spoils it for him. He comes from my neck of the woods(Southern Africa) and has vast experience with venomous snakes. He was already milking Black Mambas in 1974 at Hartebeespoort Dam snake park. He has also done a lot for snake conservation in my country, including a snake sit for 107 days with 28 venomous snakes. He has been seriously envenomated four times in his life. He has devoted his life to showing the beauty of these creatures(through his photographs etc.). While he may look reckless on t.v. it is important to remember that a lot of it is done for ratings, as well as getting people that wouldn't bother watching nature shows to start watching(hence all the action sequences).

Austin Stevens has my respect. Why?? Because he dedicates his life to conserving them and sharing them with the public.

Ditto Bush_viper 17. The man has done more for snake conservation than most.
