Does anyone know from experience what the general gestation period for a cantil is? I am doing a paper and found there to be 3 different cantils. Is that true? Taylors, Common Mexican and Ornate? Thank you much!

There are (or were) 4. There have been some changes in the nomenclature since Conant & Gloyd's tome on the Agkistrodon Complex, but the following are what they published: A. b. bilineatus, A. b. taylori,
A. b. russeolus, & A. b. howardgloydi.
I know that taylori has been elevated to specific status..it is now Agkistodon taylori, but I am not sure about the status of russeolus or howardgloydi.
The taylori is the one whose common name is ornate, or Taylor's cantil.
The russeolus is the Yucatecan. The howardgloydi's common name is castellana & the nominate species is referred to simply as the cantil.
As far as gestation, I believe my Taylor's took around six months, which is surprisingly long.
I hope this helps. ~~Greg~~

I agree with Greg that they seem to have long gestations. I had a pair mate in January and they babies were born in early July. However, I am not sure if all this time was actually gestation. It is more likely that the female stored sperm until ovulation sometime after copulation.

I thought that too, the first time, but after three years of breeding, with all going from Jan/Feb to August, I concluded that the gestation period was just longer than most. Of course, sperm retention is still not out of the question.
