Thanks for the goodwill TJ. I just hope that the young girl that was injured is ok. That is by far the most important thing. My family and I are praying for her.
It would be a shame if her tragic curcumstances were exploited by a special interest that cares nothing about her... just to promote their idealogical adgenda. Of course they will claim to be the champions for her and the public good. They don't want any interaction between people and animals... and would like to see that goal accomplished as a matter of law; and will go to almost any lengths to see that happen.

Unfortunately I agree with Andrew on this situation. This very well could be one of the Boots that gives PETA, and other Animal Rights Activist Groups the Ammunition they need to Kill the Hot Herp Hobby. I on the other hand am very pleased to hear that the Girl that was Bitten is doing fine, but this young man that brought the Snake to School should be held Fully Responsible for his actions. I hope that the Young Man that had the Snake, did not obtain it from a Show. Think of the mess that would follow that, bad huuu? This is a truly scary situation, lets keep our fingers crossed that this is not a case of some Screw Ball Dealer letting a Minor Buy a Venomous Snake. ............Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I don't know for sure. The press release didn't say... but I would be willing to bet it was killed. Once an animal has endangered the life of a human (be it dog, bear... whatever), the most likely outcome is the animal is destroyed... and rightly so. It is tragic that the young man demonstrated such irresponsible behavoir, causing this horrible situation to play out. There are laws on the books to deal with this situation, and I hope that all responsible parties are prosecuted to the fullest.

I am assuming that the news story was reasonably accurate. Typically the animal would be killed and taken to the hospital for positive ID so the patient could be properly diagnosed and treated. Often "news" stories are more inflamatory than substanitive. I would certainly hope that it was not a harmless animal that was misidentified for the sake of a compelling story.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, which I do too often, is it possible the kid didn't know what kind of snake it was?

Thankfully, this snake was not bought from a dealer. The story records that the kid caught it in Valley Forge, PA. He is going to be charged with taking wildlife from a National Park.
I noticed also that the girl that got bit was one of many who handled the snake. She does not truly qualify as an "innocent bystander." Perhaps if this incident is brought up by PETAites, we can remind them that this is NO reflection on the hobby since this kid is NOT an "over 18 specialist" with these animals.
I pray that the rest of us will be very careful about who and where we sell our animals. You might make an extra buck now, but you could lose it ALL later.

Nuno: Go back and read the first post by Cro, or the fourth post by Phobos, in this thread.
Then decide if you really want to ask the question as to what kind of snake bit the girl.
