I was just wondering if anything was started in Columbia as far as an organization to fight this legislation and the obvious AR movement in your state. Y'all need to follow in the footsteps of NC and turn the tide on this movement. It won't go away by itself. You must take steps to get organized. Don't let apathy make it easy for the AR movement. Here in NC we have created the NC Association of Reptile Keepers (NCARK). We have successfully fought off two attempts at passing the same bill here. We continue to build and empower our organization for future fights. Feel free to use what we have done as a model for success. Email me if you want more info!

Hey Andrew. I have a small comment to make, and I hope you do not take any offence to it. I am no way trying to question your level of experience or your love for the hobby. I read the post on this site on a daily basis, and it is obvious that you are extremely passionate about keeping reptiles. I envy your efforts in fighting the now popular ban that seems to be slowly infecting every state with the start of www.ncark.org. I also live in NC, and pray that the ban never goes through. My comment is in your profile, in the section "what advice do you have for new venomous keepers"? you write..."don't become a statistic to be used by those who would destroy us". But, your choice photo is of your free-handling a hot species. In my readings in posts on this site and others most people agree that the free-handling of venomous snakes photos that people love to put up is an issue that does in fact hurt the hobby. I personally feel that there is no "safe" or "proper" way to free-handle a venomous snake. When you get right down to it, the words "safe" and "proper" are just ways to disguise the word "RISK". Free-handling is a "risk", you "risk" getting bit, which in return puts a "risk" on the hobby. What people do is none of my business, and I usually don't ever comment on the free-handling ribbing. But, like I said, I respect your efforts in the fight against the bans. I just feel that the photo you chose for your profile is a little contradictory as to what you represent. I am curious to what your thoughts on this are. Please, don't take this as an attack against you - it is not!
p.s. Best of luck and thanks to Andrew and everyone else involved in "Stopping the Ban"
Sincerely,
SAL RICCO

Sal Ricco,
I think you are correct. That is not a good photo. I appreciate your feedback. No offense taken. That photo is no longer part of my profile. I know who you are. You are an aquaintance of one of our members. I would like to speak with you about joining us.

Yes, there was a table set up at the entrance of the show in Columbia, where people were handing out pamphlets explaining the bill, and its impact, and also doing something that few fighters in the exotic animal ban wars have done-point out that the AR people don't intend to stop with "exotics". They want to ban ALL animal ownership, including ordinary dogs and cats, they're going after those on other fronts. There were petitions to sign and people there to answer questions. The show was very well-attended, for a winter show, so hopefully there is now enough awareness of this. Unfortunately, the local NBC affiliate was supposed to do a segment on the bill and its impact on so many South Carolinians, and they were there filming both days, but to my knowledge, they never aired it, and I watch the local news on that channel each day.

We have been pointing out that the AR activists are against livestock farming, hunting, fishing, trapping and traditional pets. I would guess that touches about 90% of the state of SC... but most are aware of that in our community. The real question is one that you should pose to yourself... What am I prepared to do about it?!
Who was running the booth at the show? What were they able to accomplish?

Hey Andrew. I have been trying to view your website. I don't know if its my computer, but it hasn't been working for me. Also, thanks for your reply to my comment. I will contact you to become a member of NCARK. But, I now have another comment about your new picture...lol. I have a serious dislike of anything touching my nipples. And that photo makes me cringe because it looks like that Snapper is going to take a bit out of yours, lol. I will contact you soon.

Sal,
It's just one of the risks of being a reptile lover...LOL! As for the website, I would like to have it online now, but some of my collegues who are a little more detail oriented tell me to be patient. It will be up soon, nevertheless, you should have gotten the "under construction" page. I look forward to talking with you soon.

I am suprised that there is so little response to this question. It must mean that the people that were working against the bill at the show are from the Boid community. Believe me if you don't work with them to secure your future they will sacrafice venomous to keep boas and pythons. Its not that they are against you... but if you don't participate, you will be left out of the negotiation. Don't leave your future to others.
