H Cro and all ya'll just a message to say that with out a shadow of a doubt the hides which were made from silicon are standing up well, the mortar mix i used was terrible unless on totally flat surfaces and when it came to cleaning the mortar held small amounts of debris in the areas around and on it, so thre conclusion I came to was to make a small wooden frame and attatch the slate to it using thicker wood at the side and top for easier bonding and then coverd the frame inside with rock effect foam for insulation. if you take the time becomes easier to build hides and other attractive and useful parts to any pet snakes habitat happy late new year to all at shhs. Kieron: Thanks for the update.
It is good to hear that hides made with silicone adhesive worked out well. If high quality silicone is used, it is a great product, if used correctly.
The idea of using a wood frame and rock effect foam sounds like a great way to make hiding boxes.
If people take the time, and have some artistic talent, it is very possible to make very realistic and functinal cage hides, rock walls and cliffs, and other naturalistic cage structures.
The main thing is to try. Often folks are afraid of failure, so do not try to build things like cage works. If they would give it a try, they would find that it is well worth the effort, and usually turns out quite well.
Best Regards JohnZ
