I use indoor/outdoor carpet in all my cages. I think it looks much nicer then any other substrate. It may not be as easy to clean, but my kids help with cleaning. Dad(me) removes the snake, 13yo uses the shop vac on the carpet, 10yo cleans the water bowls and Dad(me) cleans glass, cage and replaces the snake. I also keep two carpets for each cage and once a month or so I give one set of carpets a deep cleaning with some bleach water and power sprayer. Works pretty good, But even with the help, its an all day job cleaning 50+ cages.

Except for my rattlesnake(wich I keep on sand and small gravel), I curently use coconut fibre as substrate for all my herps. Looks realy nice, feels realy good for the snakes and it retains humidity very well. It`s also clean and sterile when I buy it and note very expensive.

Hi I am using commercial substrate that holds a high moisture content for my Dumerils and a cheap Ash chip for my Corns,WHN and royals but sometimes using substrates made up of fibers or chips can and does become stuck in the snakes mouth and if you do not act immediately can cause some pretty nasty infections, so why use it? it easy to spot clean and looks good, I watch closely all of my Snakes eating and my vivariums are for personal enjoyment and I like them to look nice
however if I can get it I would change over to artificial terraria grass but my local store makes more money selling the others as they need constant replacing, coconut fibre is good but takes time to prepare as Its only availiable in compressed blocks.
I would without a doubt prefer to use a synthetic or artificial grass substrate as this is easier and I really dont much care for newspaper as some contain a lot of ink even after been left to dry for a day or two. anyway if anyone can suggest an easily availiable artificial substrate availiable in England please feel free to tell me what and where and if possible price

I was using cypress mulch and spagnum for most herps, paper towel or astoturf for cobras, but since I have started selling the coconut coir, I am changing over to that as it is cheep and I can store about 50 bricks in the space 1 bag of mulch takes up.

Except the anacondas (they have to be cleaned daily so they are on a newspapers)I use Canadian spaghnum peat moss for all my snakes - it's really easy to spot clean and it's really fine so it doesn't get stuck in snakes mouth. Also it's pretty cheap.
By the way Trey, what do you use?

..lol...Sadly enough I use newspaper.I am looking to switch. Its cheap but not very effective or great looking.I think for most of my Crotalus it works fine.I am looking to change my Naja and Bitis over to something that will hold humidity better.I dont see any problem with using a natural substrate with my Bitis. I do however see myself buying a bag a week for my Naja sp. Do most of you spot clean or a full substrate change for Elapids. We all know how messy those guys can be:)

I use the bed-a-beast(ground coconut hull) in my tanks with live plants. It really looks good.

Trey, the substrate I use lets you spot clean very well. It's really fine so it doesn't let the runny part run or soak to the bottom of the cage. You can pretty much remove just the mess and the rest of the tank is clean. I don't have experience with najas so I don't know how often and how much they go. If it's anything like my anacondas I'm guessing you will stick with a newspaper forever.
If you have the time maybe you can come over to look if you would like it. If you will go with the coconut stuff or mulch you may have to feed them in separate tank - I heard bad stories about gut impaction and mouth rot from those.
