Hi I was just wondering about how to go about herping when I come over to stay with a relative. She lives in Kissimee Florida.
I don't want to violate any laws, and only want to observe any hots that I may encounter, unless it is possible to go on a days herping with a recognized person or group. So if anyone knows of anyone in that area can you please let me know thankyou,
Keyz.

I can't help with your actual question (not from the area), but as long as you're in Kissimee, make sure you stop here:

If you are going to be exclusively in FL, you can not catch the EDB, Canebrake, Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Pigmy, or Coral without a FL venomous reptile license. Call 850.488.6253 to check about obtaining one. I believe you can collect all non-venomous species, save the Indigo snake and pine snake. You will want to check that tidbit of info in the non-ven. I believe there are no regulation on any lizards, frogs, or toads. I know nothing about the turtle laws other then you can not touch the Gopher tortoises. The alligators and crocs are off limits, however, there is a good population of introduced Caiman on the very southern tip, you can collect those in most places. I know that for some reason you can’t in the everglades park. I believe they are afraid people might take an American Croc by mistake. Keith Taylor tells me every time I go to FL that I am not snake hunting, I am snake hoping. Since you have come that far, go up to SC and take a snake tour with Keith. He will be happy to do business with you and you will catch more snakes in a day, then you have in your life in Stonehenge. Ha ha, you can reach him at Blackwater Reptiles. Phone 803.794.0195 or 803.791.9169. Keith can legally ship to England, so you can take back anything you catch.

Alligator snapping turtles are also protected as are a handfull of snakes that you have almost no chance of runnig across anyway other than POSSIBLY an indigo, but not likely.
Also, I do not believe you can take caiman alive in FL because you need a class II permit to possess them, but there might be some way around that for export... Although, I'd be very surprised if he could take one home anyway.

Thanks guys thats some really useful info of which I am very grateful. It is also great to know that I could possibly collect one of my own snakes,That is a goal of mine. With regards to the Caiman, here in England we would require a Dangeros Wild Animal certificate which are rarer than Hen's teeth!! Especially with our local Police dealing with most enquiries. Its easier to buy and own a shotgun than own a Hot or Caiman etc. Sucks huh. I will use the numbers given to me and thanks for making a good start to my first herping holiday.
Kieron.

When I was there a couple of years ago, I got my family to drop me off along the main highway that runs West-East, can't remember the number. I then trecked approx 200m into the bush (within hearing range of the highway)and trecked the 4 miles through scrub and shallow marsh back to the villa. This took me about six hours, I had a ruck sack with 6ltrs of water, food, compass, field guide, tourch, hook, firstaid pack, cell phone and a few other bits and bobs. I came across black racers, coachwhip?, 2 Gopher tortoises, cottonmouths, one water snake and dozens of orb weaver spiders that I was for ever walking into,(I hate spiders). The water never went deeper than my knees in places (2ft).
If you head out on this highway East bound, about 30mins down the road on you left there is a road which I think was called North rd? excellent for road cruising, early evening. If you continue down the highway you'll come to the serpintarium, well worth a visit. They allowed my son to feed the Gators while we were there. Also visit gatorland, thoroughly enjoyed it so did my son, check my profile!

Cheers John this is looking relly awesome, is the Florida area one of the more prolific areas for snakes as it sounds almost to good!
There is so much to do, and the fact that I could possibly let my son Jake actually feed an Alligator is great!, He would dearly love it as he is reptile mad,
One other thing, does anyone know if there are any captive collections of Spitting Cobras? As they are my boys absolute number one snake, and I would love for him to be able to see one, Obviously behind half an inch of glass. thanks again guys.
Kieron.

Kieron, I called Keith yesterday. He is expecting your call, you should call soon as possible if you intend to book at hunt with him. He fills up most of the time from March to about Aug. If someone else books the time you are here, you might miss out. I read that you are into corns, you will most likely be able to collect several for your breeding colony. I always prefer getting my own breeding stock. Good luck to you. –Chuck

Thanks Chuck, I am currently waiting to hear about somethig which could be a real big kinda life changing event, suffice to say that once this is done I will be able plan ahead of time. I will hopefully be in contact with Kieth after the 21st of Februrary. As thats the day I will know! cheers and please if you talk again let him know that I am still going but can't commit till the date posted.
Thanks and I will get back to you, all being well I will be going in August but it may be earlier.
I would love to collect some of my own Corns, as that is something I would never get to do.
many thanks Keyz.
