What is the best cure for beginning respiratory infection in snakes? Is there a remedy available at Wal-Mart, for example? Or anything over the counter? What is everyones' experiences with this dreaded illness? Is the snake "DOOMED" from the start? Thank you much

Im not an expert, btu I would find a vet.My vet has had us crank the temp up a few notches and an antibiotics.Seek the advice of a vet before the snake becomes terminal. Good luck and best wishes to you and your snake.

no, the snake isn't doomed and getting the temps up to the upper part of what is considered "optimal" for that species is a start........make sure there isn't any mold/mildew in the cage.....check any wood in the cage....i'd clean the whole cage out, get the temps up and simply give the animal a hide and water and do my best to get medical assistance.....you may have to call 10 places for help, but it's worth it if it saves the snake.......keep it away from other animals too

Ricky is right... clean up the enclosure, warm it up to the high end of suitable temps, and lower the humidity. You want it warm and dry. Give the snakes weight to your vet and he can give you a scrip and dosage for antibiotics.

Hey beef, try uping the room temp, if that does not work take your snake to the vet for treatment. My tortoise had a resp infection when I bought him 2 years ago and the Dr. gave him 3 injections of cipro. It run me about $8.00 a shot. Inexpensive and easy to treat. Hope this helps. Bryan

Moccasin Man, in some cases, keeping a snake with RI both warm AND dry is a nice recipe for further complications. Dry conditions will dessicate the delicate membranes in the nasal cavity which can cause further irritation of these sensitive tissues and delay or stop the healing process. Typically, warm temperatures, moderate humidity levels, and, good air flow along with a good course of antibiotics (I highly recommen Fortaz) is a good protocol to heal R.I. Hope this helps.

One more thing for Moccasin Man....I looked at your bio (impressive) and your picture....just so you know, holding a common snapping turtle by the tail is a big no-no; that's a good way to break the delicate bones in their tail. Instead, grasping along the rear carapace just above the legs works well; even for large specimens. Just wanted to let you know.

Rob... are you trying to get on my good side? LOL I looked at your profile as well (very impressive). We could probably be friends... good thing I have thick skin. My wife says I have a thick head! LOL I know you mean well, but work on your manners bro. I work with the top biologists and herpetologists in NC. They're a bunch of "know it alls" too. We will talk sometime. Good night.

I apologize if you took my words the wrong way; like I said, your bio is pretty impressive but when I see something wrong, I am a pretty upfront person; no disrespect intended. As far as my comments on the RI, that is pretty standard stuff and fairly well accepted advice. I certainly don't want to come off as your typical snooty curator because I do not consider myself in that "mould"; not even close. We run a great facility here but we are extremely laid back and an easy going bunch. I'm a big outdoor person so I know that we would have no problem getting along...the joys of cyberspace where words can get really taken out of context.
