i just heard something about a 2 year old girl being bitten by a rattlesnake and she is supposedly in ICU at birmingham(AL) childerns' hospital...i haven't found or heard the whole story but she was out in her back yard when she was bitten by the snake...first of all why is a 2 year old unsupervised anywhere, especially outside....of course i bet that the snake attacked her, probably knocked her guardian down and then bit her..nothing anyone could do....i have a 14 month old and i hate that it happened but it isn't the snakes fault....if anyone has heard the whole story lemme know...it was around the north alabama area.....i am already defending my hobby against all the snake haters...which is everyone but me around here.....humans get on my nerves...adios

Well I haven't heard the story, except for from you. It is a shame that it happened and hopefully the little girl will be alright. It was just both the snake and the kid being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That's really all it was. However, serious reprucutions were caused because of it. I just thought I would let you know, that it is hard to study snakes as a passion sometimes, even in my area(Missouri). I wish people would just realize that snakes are an important and respectable part of our forests. Just like our squirrels, deer, birds etc. Them being long and slender doesn't give people the right to kill them or hate them. The fear of snakes, is often unnatural and taught from a young age. It can be avoided, if around the right people. It makes me sick how bad of a rap snakes get by residents here in Missouri. So I know what you mean by having to defend yourself. I am currently writing an article for the Conservation Magazine about this, and also am starting a snake removal service. This, I feel, is the best I can do. If you hear anymore news about the girl, let us know. good herp hunting-----anthony

gathered a little more info...the girl's condition is improving but it took 13 ampoules of antivenom. On top of that, i heard yesterday late that someone else was bitten by a "timber"(canebrake around here) rattler..a 30 something lady ...shes better off than the little girl obviously.....i go looking for snakes in these exact places and cant find anything....they stumble on them without even trying.....i guess they're the unlucky ones, though.....
