When I spoke at a recent symposium (herp talks) in Oklahoma City, Ok a number of you generously provided me with some wonderful areas to go herping. Although the weather couldn't be worse (a string of 100+ degree days), the backcountry was breathtaking and considering I didn't know the area too well, I still found some notable herps including atrox, miliarius, and catenatus. And I even learned how to "hog tie" a pig by one of the cowboys I ran into during one of my off road ventures (well, it was a very overgrown dirt road). Thanks again to everyone who gave me some great places to go (they will be kept secret with me!).
One of my other highlights was getting a wonderful tour by Jim Stout at the Oklahoma City Zoo...what goes on behind the scenes is very, very cool stuff. They really put out the red carpet for my visit and despite having an older facility, they have a great staff and do a great job with creating some wonderful exhibits with healthy animals.

Glad your trip to my town was productive. Sadly, the heat broke yesterday with some much-needed rain. Timing is all, I guess.
The Zoo herp building, as I understand it, is next on the list for replacement there. The OKC Zoo has undergone a lot of capital improvements in the last decade, and local herp lovers are excited that they are getting around to "our" building soon.
Where did you get into the field? Atrox is mostly west and south of OKC, with the best hunting about 60 miles out.

I found the pigmys and 'sauga (and other herps like a hognose) approximately one hour north and south of OKC. The atrox were WAY south of OKC; near the Tx border I believe (I had some old maps and they got me pretty lost but still managed to find some rockpiles on some old and what appeared to be abandoned oil fields)....it was a LONG drive from OKC.

I sure wish I had some pics but my trailer was stolen on the very first night that I was in Oklahoma City....everything was stolen (I was bringing a bunch of cages to Tim Cole who was going to meet me in OKC). I left all of my hooks, tongs, and, my BRAND NEW camera in the trailer; stupid me eh? But, my trip was still incredible and I have recently learned that the trailer was recovered but we don't know yet what is still left inside.
So, all of my "pics" are in my head but those memories will last forever. I am already planning another trip to OK and I will definitely take a lot of pics next time.
